I was going through some Buffalo nickels I plan to send off to a TPG. I always check my references books before I summit any coins to make sure I have not missed any thing that may add value to a coin. Take a look at the 3 pictures I have up loaded. The first is a picture of the 1918 P buffalo nickel from a reference for the FS-05-1918-801 a DDR PUP EPU. Now look at the next two pictures. They are not pictures of an 1918 P DDR but an 1919 S. Does anyone see the similarity for the two? Any thoughts? I do see that there was die wear or break down on the U.S.of A. on the 1919 S but the two look the same to me at the PUP on EPU. Do you think the mint may have taken a rev. die from an 1918 P and added an S ? and used that rev. die to strike the 1919 S That may be a reason for the die wear on U.S. of A. on the rev. of the 1919 S . Just wanted to get some thoughts on this ...Thanks Paddy

I believe the coin you posted is die deterioration all the way. I think that while there is some doubling in similar areas with that amount of die deterioration I can't see it being anything else IMO.

These are not at all the same type doubling, not even close.

These are not at all the same type doubling, not even close. Please remember one of the beauties of doubled dies is that they must look exactly like the known variety or class of doubling, not just sort of or kind of but for the most part dead on.
There is alway acceptions but not this far off.

agreed, look at the top of the rib for the doubled die.

    Yours is a clashed die.
