A year for a coin to come back from PCGS?

Around March or April of last year a coin dealer whom I know sent two of my coins out to PCGS to be certified. I have asked the coin dealer several times if the coins have come back and he keeps telling me he is still waiting for the coins. However, tonight I called PCGS and they told me that the coins should have come back by now. Is there any logical reason why he could be taking longer than everyone else? I have found him to be ethical and honest and I am puzzled by this.

Many times, dealers will withhold a submission until they have enough coins to make it cost-effective for them. They don't always tell you the whole story.

Grading companies are overwhelmed from COVID. They don’t stop receiving submissions because that’s how they get money, but they have less graders to follow safety guidelines.

Same thing with card grading. I sent a basketball card in to PSA through an honest card shop in August and still haven’t received it. It’s crazy.

I am in agreement with what @cpm9ball said. I have left coins with my dealer that sat for six weeks or so before he had enough for a submission..... However a year is excessive.... Now my dealer is a friend of mine and I trust him completely. I don’t know how well you know this dealer but I believe you are due for a straight answer. I wouldn’t be forceful or rude. But I would respectfully insist on knowing the story with the coins you entrusted to him.

And let's not forget the mail service. Doesn't matter which one, they all have their problems with this pandemic. I would ask the dealer to put a trace on it. If he poo-poos the idea, I think I'd have a change of opinion on his reliability.

No matter what it shouldn’t take that long. Is your dealer trustworthy? Any reasons to doubt the information you’re receiving from him? How long did it take for him to send them in after you dropped them off with him?

Ask w we questions and get answers. Get a tracking number from your dealer. Once you have a good deal of information call PCGS again and discuss the problem.

Back in the middle of December I sent 8 quarters to PCGS for grading. I got them back first week of February. Take @Collecting Nut advice and press dealer for a tracking number to prove they were sent in.

Cut out the middle man and submit them yourself. It may cost more but it's worth it.

And it really doesn't cost that much more. Not to mention the peace of mind not relying on someone else's morals.

It's much better to have full control of the submissions. Even if the dealer is completely honest theres even more unforeseen risks like them going out of business or god forbid dying and you would never see your coins again. You also don't know how they'll be packed shipping witch could add some friction or hits along the way etc

PSA was a unique case that had nothing to do with being short handed. The card market has been on absolute fire especially the gaming card market like pokemon. They just simply got overwhelmed and had to stop accepting submissions to catch up. At one point they got more submissions in a 3 day period than they usually got in 3 months

Whatever is going on with the OPs coin is almost certainly something to do with his dealer. The dealer could have taken forever to submit it, could have lost the coins and is just blaming PCGS, could have just flat out stolen them and is just using PCGS as a delay tactic who knows. Whatever the reason PCGS would have absolutely been done with the submission long ago if they had gotten it right away

I have issues with PCGS to the point where I'm canceling my membership. Very first coin I sent was a cleaned coin that was to be a crossover from ANACS. I specified that it was to be stabbed no matter what and they didn't. 2nd time I sent in a coin and it came back lopsided in the slab so I sent it back and they put it through regular grading even though it was a reholder. PCGS customer service is a joke!

I talked with the coin dealer and it turns out he has been so busy he got the coins mixed up. One of the coins was broken out a PCGS holder because something had to be taken off of the coin but he mistakenly sent it to NGC who in turn graded the coin a lower grade and the other coin he is still looking. I won't have to pay to have the coin sent to PCGS. He was apologetic about it. It was hard for me to believe he was trying to pull anything since he has be honest with me. I have the paperwork for the coins anyway if he had tried something.

Well glad you finally got a straight answer but it's pretty shady he stalled you and mislead you on it for a year. I'd question whether he pulls a switcheroo on you with your coins now also.

I have to say this though, you still don't have your coins.....

Or worse, one guy had a dealer submit for him and the coin was damaged while it was at the TPG. It was a rare coin worth hundreds, but the dealer in order to save on the grading fees and shipping listed the value at something like $25. Naturally that was all the TPG was willing to pay in compensation. And the TPG was in the right to do so.

Yet another good reason to submit for yourself.

WHEN "should they have come back by now"...? THAT is the question. It's a ridiculous scenario...way too long...and glad you are finally and seriously pursuing an answer. Understand back-logs and delays...two, three month return times...maybe longer but not too much longer. A YEAR and still not back...? Something is rotten in Denmark, Newport Beach, or with your dealer. To the extent you can ask/receive answers from PCGS as you weren't the submitter, I'd be on the phone without a break until I received some specific answers. And to the extent your dealer was/wasn't checking with PCGS on them for you each time you asked him, might determine whether you should seek a new dealer, or better yet submit the coins yourself...and maybe no longer to PCGS. It's not that hard. Do dealers charge something for this...? I dunno...I've never had a dealer/anyone submit something for me. Sorry to learn of your trouble, but do keep us posted...this should be good.

IMHO the dealer is hiding something. So busy, my backside. Busy with what? I guarantee his shop sales were way down over the past year because of Covid. I agree with John, I'd be very wary of a switcheroo. Not only that, there's no excuse for any dealer worth his salt to make a mistake and not tell you about it for a whole year. I'd demand my money back and the coins replaced. Next time I'd stay very far away from that guy.

I have had several other coins sent out to be graded though this dealer and they usually took about seven months. I think he has been so busy he lost track of the coins since I have heard him myself tell others he's been overloaded with work but I think he kind of covered for himself by saying it was because of the Covid virus that the coin was taking a long time to come back. I think if I sent the coins directly to PCGS or NGC I would have to pay a lot more. When they are sent out through this dealer I will pay $35 to have them come back more quickly or $37 if time is not that important. I think I would rather stick with this dealer since I have known him a long time and he seems honest when it comes to selling and buying coins even if it may take longer than usual to get back the coins. I have had many other coins sent out through him and none of the coins have ever been switched and all of the coins came back.
