Today Heritage Auctions had a huge auction of Ancient coins. I didn’t think I would win anything since there were so many bidders for almost everything. But I managed to snag this Athenian Tetradrachm at a reasonable price and I’m super excited to get it.
Stunning! I never took you for an ancients guy but the tetradrachms always catch my attention. Great piece
Oh yeah I’ve always been an Ancients guy but mostly focused on Ancient Greece & Rome. Originally I planned on going to the auction to bid on a Roman Aureus of Trajan but I lost that one. XD Then I kept watching and saw this tetradrachm at a decent price and decided to pull the trigger since Athenian Owls are classics.
Thanks mate! ^_^ I really like how it still has almost all of it’s original luster 2,400 years after being minted. That’s so crazy!
Fifth Century BC Athens, that's like where Western Civilization began. You made a great first choice. Take good care of her...
I definitely will! We are only the caretakers of these coins and our job is to enjoy them and make sure they are passed down for future generations to enjoy. You're right the 5th century BC was the founding of democracy. This coin was minted not long after Leonidas and his 300 Spartans which blows my mind.
Saweeet! Did you get it for less than $1,000? (I only have a very vague idea of the values of a few ancients so if this is WAY out of the park... I plead ignorance)
Beautiful piece - congratulations! I'm not a collector of ancients; however, this is one of those coins which feels like it has a place in every collection. If (...when?) I venture into ancient coins, the infamous Owl will certainly be at the top of my want list!
A super nice coin. And it’s a wonderful first ancient coin. That’s a beautiful owl on the reverse. Congratulations!
Thanks guys! It’s funny you mention that because according to the description the reverse was minted with “high relief dies”.
I wish xD Nah I bid $1,250 and then there was a $250 buyers premium so $1500 total. The bidder I beat bid $1200 so I paid $50 more than him.
