New to the forum, hope some of you have some info to help!

I have an Indian head cent that has an "S" for the last digit of the date - 190S.

It is definitely an S and not another digit, the style of the S is equivalent to the San Francisco mint mark on other US coinage, but the size is the same as the other digits.

Has anyone heard of this error before?

I can post scans if there is interest.

    Thanks!

Welcome. I have never heard of this type error, but yes - please post scans. That will help.

Here are pics, sry in advance for poor quality, but I think its clear enough that the S is distinct.

I think if the corrosion was removed you would find that it was a 5 or a 6. Looks more like a 5 to me. Just my opinion.

I don't think its a 5 because the ball serif at the top of the S is unlike the 5 on IHC's I've compared to.

A 6 is more likely the culprit. However, under magnification, there appears a break at the bottom of the circle where the other end of the S should be.

I do agree that removing corrosion would be beneficial, but I'm wary to attempt.

Well on a common date easy to find IHC date I don't think a cleaning would hurt it much. Of course I would not do it since I really have never tried anything like this on a IHC.
