    @Tracey L Aldrich
    Small dates and large dates are common on 1982 Copper and Copper plated zinc cents..
    Some information..

    There is a Small Date Denver Mint Copper which is extremely rare. Only 2 have ever been discovered over the years and I don't think a 3rd example of one will ever be found again.
    You will drive yourself mad looking for one! :nailbiting:
    That's why I don't even bother.

    I am moving and found an old tupperware bowl full of pennies I had been saving. I DID find a 1982 D Small date wide! I do not have a scale. Please can you advise me what type of scale to buy and from where or should I call Heritage Auctions here in Dallas and make an appt? I'm trying to figure out how to take a close photo of it. Any help is welcome.

    Jewelers gram scale. What do you mean by wide?
    Show a picture. Even better.. Start your own separate thread with pictures. Most likely a 2.5 gram copper plated zinc cent. Not the one that is super rare.

    Wide as in wide space between the A and M in America. That's how I found it. I was separating pennies to begin, based on wide vs close. Then I saw the date, compared it to posted photos and verified it as small date. How do I upload the photo?

    @Lynn A
    1982 wide AM is normal..

    ..From its introduction in 1959 through 1992, all Lincoln Memorial Cents including both business and proof strikes were intended to have the Wide AM reverse.

    Thank you for your reply. I'm headed out now to local jeweler to have it weighed and find a scale. I wish I could figure out how to post the pic I took. Appreciate your help. If it weighs in correctly, I'll let you know if my bubble reinflates :)

    Wait a minute. The chart you showed says that the 1982D is copper plated zinc. The only pure copper cents are not 1982D coins. So which is it? It doesn't show up in the chart.

    Fyi, I have more close AM than wide so I thought, incorrectly, that the close AM was more common. Hmmm learn something new each day for an old gal like me. Thanks again. I'll figure out how to post that pic.

    Those are the normal known varieties. There are not supposed to be 1982 copper small date from Denver.. Understand?
    1982 had Copper Cents and Copper plated zinc Cents. It's very easy.

    Start a new thread when you get your answer..
    You totally hijacked this thread.

    Ask someone to help post pictures. Teenagers are great with posting stuff on the internet!

    Okay, I understand. Is weighing the coin the only way to tell if the coin is plated?

    Copper Planchet - 3.11 grams
    Copper Plated Zinc Planchet - 2.5 grams

    Some copper plated zinc planchets have plating bubbles or blisters and split plating where the inner zinc is exposed. That's another way to tell.
