Picked up this raw 1925 Norse American Medal (Thick) last week. There was also a thin, and I was going to get both, but the thin had an ugly scratch (see last pic) on the reverse that I thought might details it, so I went with just the thick. I was putting this at AU58 initially, but now that I have it in hand, and compare it to my MS62 (Thin) and MS63 (Thick), I think it may go higher then either of those. What's you're thoughts? I do realize this isn't a common coin that everyone is familiar with, but thought I'd throw it out there. The New one: MS62: MS63 (Thick): And the thin with the scratch (Congress) that i passed on:
Something about it gives me AU 58 vibes as well (but if there is no wear, then it should be unc). There looks to be less disturbance/hits/marks in the fields compared to the MS 63. I've seen a few of these in auctions and sometimes lower graded examples look better than higher graded ones. I'll go with an MS 64 prediction.
Nice acquire. Every time I see one, I think about biding on it, but so far, I've resisted as I need other commemoratives for my collection.
I bid on it until it got to where I felt comfortable. The winner was one increment up, and he/she still got it at a decent (not great, but decent) price. But, yes, that scratch was enough where I knew to bid the coin, not the win. The thick one I got cheap.
Sounds like you made the right call. Even a details grade (for the scratch) is worth it if the price is low enough (they sell and one can use the proceeds to fund future pickups).
Quite a few tiny dings/marks but not enough to put it below MS60 IMO, that's a very interesting coin that I have not seen before!
