This week's Coin World has a front page article about Representative Gary Peters (D-Michigan) petition to have a limited number of 2009 Proof AGEs and ASEs struck. He points out that the packaging and dies already exists and it would be a waste of money not to produce them. He recommends some sort of lottery system to determine who gets to buy them. I doubt anything will come from this, but it would be interesting if it did. :hail::eat:
Very interesting. Thanks for posting this. I remain hopeful for something such as this to come along or that someday it's revealed there were a very short run of the Proofs minted, unobtainable by the vast majority that wanted them, but become a super rarity seen at shows and auction for insane money.
As it got later in the year (and prior to the announced cancellation) I made a second Mint subscription for an additional four of the proof ASEs. That would have given me a total of five of perhaps a low mintage ASE. Even after I know they will probably never be made, I still have the two subscriptions. Just hopeful I guess. Sometime in February I'll probably go in and cancel one.
Booner: I was under the impression that any US Mint product subscriptions one had in place for the 2009 Eagle products that were canceled this year by the Mint automatically remained in place for the next year, the 2010 Eagle products. Therefore if you cancel your subscription now this could cause you to loose an opportunity at the 2010s should they be released next year. Is that not the case? On October 6th I received the following email from the US Mint regarding their policy with the subscriptions after canceling Proof ASE/AGE products:
Krispy, You are 100% correct. I opened a second subscription and once I am 100% sure the 2009 proofs will not be minted I'll cancel that one. I'll still leave my original suscription open. Tim
I'm confused by your thinking... I believe that the subscriptions are not for a particular year of coinage as none appears in the details of a subscription. So why does it matter if you have one or two separate subscriptions? Whatever is the next product released is what you'll get. The only thing that one might differ in multiple subscriptions is amount of pieces to be fulfilled for each subscription. I say this because if the Mint imposed a household limit and you have a subscription for an amount greater than that, would the Mint not fulfill your order if the subscription exceeds the amount per household? or does the Mint correct subscription orders for household limits and only partially fulfill those. I'm not doubting your plan, I am hopeful as well and have several subscriptions for the same exact product, lets say the ASE proof coin with three different amount of pieces per order: 1, 3, 5 in hopes of circumventing household limits from dropping my order if I have exceeded the limit. Just curious, thanks for your replies.
Well a petition probably won't do anything since the law supersedes it. If he really wanted to do something about it he should have introduced LEGISLATION.
I heard about this. It's a pipe dream though. There's not enough time to get anything done in the next 29 days. Not to mention that congress and all other high ranking govt officials will be off after this week on holiday leave, as they're normally home with their families most of the month of December. So, even considering 'normal business days' left for anybody to get anything done is useless.
I'm sure many of you already saw this but Mint News Blog finally picked up the story as well: Congressman Asks for 2009 Proof Gold and Silver Eagles While nothing much may come of the letter the Congressman sent regarding the 2009 products, I am glad that I wrote to my New York State Senators at the urging of SirCharlie, as he also wrote to several of his elected officials upon hearing the Mint's October 6th announcement. At the very least bringing attention to the issue and expressing our dissatisfaction with the Mint's decision to cancel products this year may help strengthen the call for preventing such repeat disappointments if the issue arises again. Just because we may have well lost the 2009 products, as concerned collectors, we should remain firm and continue to express our interests and wishes to our elected officials for future Mint products that we hope to obtain for our collection and richness of our hobby, profession, whathaveyou.
It's Dec. 3rd and it ain't gonna happen thanks to Govt. officials It's Dec. 3rd and it ain't gonna happen thanks to Govt. officials brilliant thinking. Here are my feelings on that: '"I may be a sinner and dommed to hell but at least I'm not a Govt. official"! From HBO's Deadwood, my favorite show!
We knew it wouldn't happen on it's own and within normal production time frames. But that's no excuse not to do something now for the future issues of these coins if you are actually concerned. And ask yourself who put the Govt. officials in office to begin with?
Who puts them in for the most part is other Govt. Officials. Who puts them in for the most part is other Govt. Officials. "There is no end to madness once started, it feeds itself" this one original by BHPIII
...and those who continually express their dissatisfaction and seemingly do little else but put the blame and responsibility on others. If you are unhappy (as the scores of your negatively-toned posts seem to indicate) with them (govt. officials) then let them know, and if you are missing your 2009 Eagle products, then please, also, let them know. Yes, you certainly propagate that sentiment well yourself, thanks for churning that out for us.
Your most welcome, it was my pleasure. Your most welcome, it was my pleasure. Truly whether or not the mint does this or that or the other thing is one of the least important thing in this world, they gonna do what they are gonna do and it's not that I do not care it's that it is futal to stand up to things so far out of your control as this. If I could not poke fun and call them as "a duck is duck" I might start getting serious about them (Govt. officials) and they do not deserve my seriousness, They have no soul and deserve little respect. Persons of the world coin colleting is a hooby it is one of the least most important things in the world compared to, the smile on a child, care and respect given to elders, a kind glance at a store clerk, being true to yourself, listening carefully to people who do have a full meaningful life, commpassion for persons less fortunate than you or I, knowing full well that it would only take clean drinking water to save tens of thousands of people from death each year! Whether or not the mint will produce proof eagles in 2009 and if I can change thier mind or have any impact on thier thinking is at the bottom of the list of items imprtant in life!
BHPIII : Please, don't even for a minute preach a humanitarian attitude now after all your other various rants that opted to leave that aspect out nor think you're priorities in this hobby are any more humble or in order than the next person around here. You simply are complaining and doing nothing about it. 'Put up or shut up.' Your negativity gets this topic nor the hobby anywhere, and I don't really give a hoot in this thread what kind of 'expert' you are or how many years under your belt you have collecting. It's a hobby, obviously. Not a humanitarian issue that I'm suggesting you express yourself to elected officials about. I don't expect a reply when I write to them, but I feel the better having expressed myself in a positive and directed manner towards my wish, which doesn't come before more serious global and human issues these members of society are charged with in their office. While this forum is narrowly defined around topics of coin & currency collecting, all people are multi-dimensional beings, likewise those you deem with no soul and not worthy of your respect. Who said anything about respect? Some people may wish to be heard and therefore ask that the Mint continue to make certain products or reverse certain decisions they thought bad, have a discussion about how to do it or the feasibility of the goal, rather than to throw up your hands and blame an entity bigger than yourself or that you are helpless against it, that the blame falls on faceless names within that entity... come on. YOU have to do something to make them have a face and take an action to get respect if that's what you are after... and YOU have to bring them down off the too high altar you put them on and now cannot reach out to. I don't care if you will or will not act upon this and write to your elected officials, that's not my issue or business, but I take objection to your constant heckling of those who do or those who attempt other goals within the hobby. Thanks for reading my posts too. I mean no harm to you. I am not angry, but it would be nice to keep this ON TOPIC which is not what you did when you entered the discussion back in post #10 laying into govt. officials.
Just as I said, I thank you for proving my point. Just as I said, "There is no end to madness once started, it feeds itself" Thank you for proving my point. You have just gotten upset at nothing, nothing at all - not worth a dime!!!
Just because you said it doesn't make it so. But as I said before, you started the "madness" which you brought to this thread... and are now trying to prove it as the handiwork of others by manipulating the discussion. Just another example of your shirking responsibility to someone else. And your saying it doesn't change the fact of your negativity and lack of action regarding the points I brought up despite you wanting a say in the matter or to derail topics to rants on govt. and institutions therein. As I said in my previous post "I am not angry", re: your, "upset at nothing" and your idea that this is "nothing" is your personal subjective opinion. If this topic was so much "nothing" to you, then why did you even participate in this thread today.
