Nice score! What a beautifully colored sestertius! Most often, when I miss a coin, I don't see it again. The only one that comes to mind is this AE of Messalina, 2nd wife of Claudius from Aeolis I entered into a bidding war when it came up in Triskeles 28, and dropped out around $200; at least two other bidders pushed it up to a hammer of $355. I guess the winner didn't pay, because it showed up again in Triskeles 30 where I won it for $150
@Roman Collector That is a fantastic purchase! Below is my second chance coin. I was bidding in the Spink auction and won a couple of coins. However, the coin I really wanted was the rare Domitian denarius you see below. The problem was that the coin was part of a group lot. I did not need any of the coins in the group except this one. I did not bid and the coin was missed. This is a very rare coin and I did not know when another might appear. Well nine days later the coin I wanted showed up as its own lot on Vcoins from a seller I had dealt with before. The seller broke up the lots. I bought the coin immediately. The coin is not just rare. I really wanted the coin for the portrait as well. This portrait is a very sympathetic treatment of the emperor's countenance. ..you have to substitue 'coins' and 'coin bidding/buying' for drugs/drink ...unless that also accompanies the 'binge'.....its hard for me to imagine anyone in this hobby that hasn't...
Yes - Dianacoins - the terrific site on eBay was selling a beautiful Macrinus sestertius - I didn’t have one and this was perfect in terms of condition and affordability. Somehow it appeared for sale a few months later -the first buyer never paid. And I bought it for a great price. How I miss being able to buy from this company. I’ll post it when I have a chance.
Boy, I do like that "Tiber" patina. And yes, your photo way outdoes the Leu image. Here's a Hadrian I had with similar patina. I sold it when I was hard up for money, and now am remorseful over that.
I collect Septimius and his family, and look at quite a few sesterii of Geta - this is a BEAUTY - for some reason many Geta sestertii from this period are heavy. At 31mm and 28 grams this one must be THICK. Large heavy sestertii are wonderful, but large heavy close to perfect sestertii are a gift from heaven for those that love big bronzes. In short, large heavy sestertii of Geta are rare but large heavy sestertii of Geta in this condition can be counted on one hand - this was a magnificent purchase! This is the kind of coin that one never tires of looking at.
