Hey all, been awhile since I’ve been on here, I picked these up at an antique mall in Missouri for what is a steal if they’re real, world coins aren’t really my specialty, I bought them because I liked the design. I shared with a coin forum on reddit and some people expressed concern about authenticity, just wondering what you guys think! Thanks in advance for any opinions! I can upload more pictures if necessary!.
I only paid 12/ea for them, it’s not the end of the world if they’re fake, the shorting Thaler does feel like silver though. What looks wrong about them?
Honestly we need better pictures out of the holder. The 8 reales does look iffy to me, especially the eagle, but there were an awful lot of differences in design between the mints and years, some were poorly made.. Someone should try to nail down the mint etc, then compare with known good coins. The lines in the right shield look mushy on the shooting thaler.
The shooting Thaler is definitely a Chinese fake - rims are wrong, colour is off, details are poorly defined. The 8r also looks bad for similar reasons, but there are others who know a lot more this series than I who lurk around these parts, so I'll leave it to them to explain in detail.
Never buy something when you're unsure about the authenticity. A Swiss shooting thaler being sold for only $12 is a huge red flag.
When you upload your pictures please check Full Size rather than Thumbnail, it's a mighty help. Also, as stated earlier, right way up makes it easier, I got a bad neck and can't tilt... Thanks
I think both coins are fakes. Weight information would be helpful. Both coins look washed out, with mushy detail. They are also virtually missing any signs of denticles, those tooth-like patterns around the rim of a coin. The color of bother coins seem to indicate that some other metal might have been used to produce them.
Here's an 8 reales from Oaxaca, 1863, assayer FR, somewhat weak in the centers (typical) that might be useful for comparison. 26.8 grams
