I have been after one of these for a few years and finally had the opportunity to obtain one. Decentius - Barbarious AE Maiorina Obv:- D N DECENTIVS NOB CAES, Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev:- VICTORIAE DD NN AVG E CAE, two Victory's standing facing each other, between them holding a shield resting on a short column, inscribed VOT V MVLT + in four lines Barabrous imitation of the mint of Amiens (S-V//branch AMB branch). A.D. 351-353 Reference(s) – Bastien pl. 17, 32 3.13 g. 21.63 mm. 180 degrees This ancient imitative piece combines both the mintmark of the mint at Ambianum, and the reverse field letters S-V which are only found on issues of Lugdunum According to Bastien there are a number of coins such as the one above and others imitating Ludunum that probably come from the same regional, unofficial workshop.
For an imitation, that looks great. Imitations often seem to degenerate the VOT X MVLT portion, possibly due to the smaller size, but this one looks great. Coulda fooled me for sure
Agreed! That thing looks pretty Decent-ius Impressed to actually have an approximate barbarous mint. Here's a imitative of his big brother:
congrats. here is a die match I saw for sale a few years ago and another one that belongs to forum member Hamilcar Barca
I don't have a Decentius of Amiens but offer this Magnentius of what I would call fine style. More common are really popular when found in high grade and full strike is the AE1 of this mint. Mine is a bit ordinary due to legend weakness. This is my favorite mint of this era. None of the coins are really common.
Those are lovely. I have this Magnentius with just AMB in exe.
