I purchased 2009 BU Kennedy half dollars (P & D), BU nickels (P & D), and a BU dime (P only) on ebay for $3.24 including shipping. I thought that I was getting circulation coins (eg. non satin finished) but they were actually coins cut from a mint set. It still seems like a good price for $3.24 and the seller didn't really say they weren't from a mint set. What does this distinguished group think? You should know that I already have 3 UNC sets from the mint but none of the 2009 circulation coins.

The mint sets from the USmint have more coins: i.e. the 5 different dollar coins, the 6 different quarters, 4 different pennies, nickel, dime, and half for 18 coins per mint for 36 total. You might consider buying the set from the USmint if you want all the coin types for the year.

Whether what you bought was a good deal - dunno; if your happy seems fine. Not like you gave them $10 for $1.20...

I think what Phil was angleing at Bilbo, was the fact that he was after circulation strikes and wound up with mint set (satin) strikes.

The hunt continues Phil (and no damage done)......:)

I cut open a mint set for the nickels and dimes for my Whitmans. Clad coins are of such a small premium, pricewise, that I have no issues between satin and non-satin finish. Just my humble 2c.

And now for a stupid question, how do you tell the difference between a satin finished nickel and a business strike nickel? My eyes must be getting bad because I'm having a heck of a time telling the difference.

That's what they all are on Ebay.....no D mint dimes or nickels of the business strikes have been found yet.

And it is because of that difficulty distinguishing the two that strikes that I don't let it concern me so I fill my albums with coins from mint sets.....:smile

There is a pretty big distinction between the two. I don't know how really to explain it other than saying get one of each and compare them and you'll see, bad eyesight or not. As far as value though, I'm with you and Green in that I don't see any difference.
