Another thread came up where we were discussing how many countries or territories had Queen Victoria on them. It's rather a long list! Here was my attempt at a Numista search looking for which ones had her actual portrait. Let's see how many of these we can find. Don't worry about duplicates--anything with a portrait of Queen Victoria counts. I'll start with a 1 Rupee, 1889. Australia British Honduras Canada New Brunswick Nova Scotia Prince Edward Island Newfoundland Hong Kong Cyprus French Somaliland (counter marked) East Africa Gibraltar Guyana India East India Company Alwar Bharatpur Bikanir Bindraban Dewas Dhar Isle of Man Jamaica Jersey Straits Settlements Mauritius Mozambique (counter marked) Nauru (modern) New Zealand (tokens) St. Helena, Ascension & Tristan de Cunha (modern) Sierra Leone (modern) Somalia (modern) South Africa (patterns) Ceylon (Sri Lanka) Trinidad & Tobago (counter marked) Turks & Caicos (modern) UK Vanuatu (modern) Yemen (counter marked) Zambia (modern)
Next, an 1840 Rupee issued under the East India Company. Bonus: an 1898 British Trade Dollar (Bombay Mint). Doesn't really fit the category as it doesn't have her portrait, but was issued late in her reign.
Quite the extensive list... Queen Elizabeth II still has her beat though, with 35 countries/territories that have featured her on their coins. Kudos to you for taking the time to find/write down all the different places, I don't have the patience for that LOL
Next, like Russian dolls, some Victoria silvers from the UK: 1 Penny 1900 (maundy?) 1 1/2 Pence 1839 (for use in Ceylon and the Caribbean colonies) 2 Pence 1838 (maundy?) 3 Pence 1870 4 Pence (groat) 1848 6 Pence 1874 1 Shilling 1839 1 Florin (2 shillings) 1883 1/2 Crown (2 1/2 shillings) 1885
Hong Kong 10 and 5 cents, both 1900 A lot of my coins have holes in them. Most of my small silvers were culled from world junk silver bins in the 1990s.
British Honduras 10 Cents 1894 The date is hard to make out, but this was a single-year type, so it must be 1894.
Just a footnote. British West Africa was around during her reign but didn’t issue any coinage until George V, but that’s why the old girl missed out.
Interesting thread. I don't have any other than UK to show, unfortunately. Here's the smallest denomination in my trays though Q
Reminds me of the Dansco Hong Kong set that I have. This is a modified version of it Dansco version can be seen here https://issuu.com/gxseries/docs/hong_kong_dansco_type_set Updated digital version can be seen here https://issuu.com/gxseries/docs/hong_kong_type_album_1863_present
British Guiana and West Indies, 4 Pence, 1891 And for comparison, William IV 1/4 Guilder, 1836, when they still used Dutch currency units. (This one was a junk silver find!)
Straits Settlements (Now Singapore and parts of Malaysia) Coppers: 1 cent 1845 (East India Company), 1862, 1872, 1919 (George V) Silvers: 10 cents 1888 (x2), 1901, 1910 (Edward VII), 1927 (George V) 5 cents 1897, 20 cents 1898, 50 cents 1901
Cyprus, 9 Piastres, 1901 Someday I want to find a 4 1/2 Piastres to go with it. And this didn't make my list, but it's too cool not to include. A "barbaric imitation" rupee with Emperor Guangxu instead of Victoria (not mine) for circulation in Tibet. Here's a real Victoria rupee for comparison.
Isle of Man, 1/2 Penny 1839 Jersey, 1/26 Shilling, 1844 I have some Guernsey coinage from that era too, but I don't think any of those have her portrait on them.
