Looks like a machinist did his magic on it with a lathe. Value 10c

nope, the smooth area is shiny, like a proof coin, and thre is no marks showing it was ground down, (ive worked as a machinest, so i know what to look for) my brother got this in change a while ago, and my father holds it now. i've no idea what it cold be from,

Nothing during mint operations could or would cause this.

It could have been machined (post mint) then polished, why I have no idea.
Move on to the next one it's just a damaged coin.

definitely post-mint damage, I've seen coins like that used as yo-yos

From about six to eight you can see what appear to be tooling or machine marks moving in a sweeping motion down and to the left. Any ideas? That is certainly nothing I can imagine being done at the mint.

well, i can tell you, any marks you see (red marks) are a trick of the scanner, the coins surface is smooth like a proof coins flat parts. as for yoyo"s, could be, but i dont know.

either that, or the toy yo-yo, you would glue 2 of this type of dimes to a stick inbetween, tie a string to it, and voila! a mini yo-yo!

Put it up on eBay and you might get $100 bucks for it. Use a common everyman type story like finding it in change or something similar and it should sell.

    Best of luck.

its not that i dont believe, i've just never seen this kind of damage before, and was trying to eliminate all possibilities of what could have happened

What caused it is not really the issue. the fact is that there isn't a way that it could have happened in the minting process then it is just post mint damage of unknown origin.

So your advice is to get $100 for a piece of junk with a good

So your advice is to get $100 for a piece of junk with a made up good story???
Another perfectly honest eBay performer I am sure of it.
Look each time you make a statement like that or worse actually do it you sign your name to it forever.
A man with honor will throw this piece of post mint damaged coin out the car window as he crosses the first bridge so no one else will ever feel the need to lie and deceive with this coin again.
Put it up on eBay!!!, my God man grow a soul and become a man.

Yeah, that's a pretty lame thing to do.

Lame thing to do if it's hyped up as something it is not, but I think it would be perfectly acceptable to list it as a unique dime that's been modified. I could see those inclined to wear coins as jewelry having a neat necklace with that. Though it took less skill, to me it's no different than a hobo nickel. Just someone with too much time on their hands. I'm not so fervent as to demand that it be destroyed.(not saying that you are either!)

I'm not sure what sign your name to it forever means but cleary some don't have a sense of humor when it comes to fleabay.

Honor among coin sellers? Surely you jest.
