i don;t think i will get as lucky again.

it sure is easyer going through halves then going through nickels! much easyer ot read the dates ;)

I would guess that 60%+ of all the coins i went through where 1971 issues... i don't ever want to see a 1971 again!

I got a bunch of coins from my father, who got them from his father (who was a collector). I have 25 - 1964 JFK Half Dollars that appear to be uncirculated and in great shape. What would something like this go for if sold in a lot of 25? I'm so new to this and never had an interest in coins until I got all of this last week. I have Silver Dollars and Halfs dating from the 1880's to the early 1920s, plus tons of quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies from the same period. I'd love to sell these off and hope that someone who appreciates this hobby can enjoy them more than I will. Is it best to find a dealer or just go through Ebay? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

typically about $70-$90 for a twenty coin roll,a dealer would prob offer $50-$60...you would do better on E-BAY...I personally would hang onto them for 5yrs and see what happens to the value.(JFKs)

If the Kennedy's are actually BU, you're looking at between 50 and 65 dollars for a 20 coin roll. Going by the realized prices of completed e-bay auctions. I would, however, agree with Silver Surfer and suggest hanging on to them for a while.

When browsing through the rolls are you guys only looking to pull the 64's? Is there any other rare ones to be considering when looking?

    Thanks :)

You want to keep all of the following:
Pre 1964 - Franklins and Walkers 90% Silver
    1964 90% Silver
    1965-69 40% Silver
2001-2005 Aren't Silver, but they weren't issued for circulation
    1974-D Double Dies
ANY proofs (denoted by an "s" mintmark)

Thats about it... Unless you want to keep the foreign coins, casino tokens, holed, counter stamped, or gold plated coins. ;)

Thanks alot! Also, as far as pricing goes it is only 50c a peice, correct? Will most banks let you buy them if you are not a member or anything? Sorry for the stupid questions... new the the hobby and interested :). I appriciate all the help greatly.

Some banks will order them for you even if you aren't a customer, but most banks require that you have an account there. They come in boxes of $500 face, so 1000 Halves per box. If $500 is too steep, you can simply ask tellers at your local bank if they have any loose coins or rolls lying around.

Perhaps it should be mentioned that, if you want to avoid opening 50 machine-wrapped (probably) rolls, you might want to consider a $1,000 bag if you can get one. Although, it could be suggested there is nothing in coin searching quite like opening a roll and immediately seeing one or a number of bright silver rims.

I'm impressed! 4,200 rolls times 20 coins is 84,000 coins. I wonder what percent of all halves that is? I've moved on to mostly dimes. I am the proud owner of 4 1996-W dimes so far. I have all but the 1998-S matte for my Kennedy collections and my birthday is next week...Mua! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Most of what I found came during the first 6 months of my coin quest. I was averaging about 1 silver Kennedy per every 3 rolls, then it dropped to about 1 coin per 5 rolls. I was happy with that until I went through an extended period where every half I got was a 1998-P. I got frustrated, bought more rolls, and they were all 1998-Ps, thousands and thousands of them. I was glad when that stopped! That experience lowered my average to less than 1 coin per every 8 rolls. I finished at 1 per every 8.65 rolls. As so many other posters here have written, it is all about averages.

My initial goal was to find 500 coins and at first I thought I had that licked. In the end I came up a little short. I'm going to keep searching Kennedy halves but I'm backing down from an average of about 80 rolls per week to 50 rolls a week. Of course that could change if I start finding a lot of coins!Eventually I want to put together a US mint bag of $1000 in 40% silver Kennedy halves. It may take 4 or 5 more years to do it.

I'd love to find a different type of coin to search. I'm a little burned out on Mr. Kennedy now, but not enought to stop. I've considered pretty much everything else. Nickels seem to yield the highest return on your investment of time, but I just love finding silver! I know about the war nickels but they were made for such a short period and constitute such a low overall percentage of the Jefferson run. Quarters and/or dimes would be a blast, but I fear I won't find a lot because they've been so picked over and circulate so much. Pennies? I've searched a few rolls of those, actually narrowing my choice to either halves or cents before I started this last year. It is just that pennies are so darn hard to keep track of and read the dates- for an old guy like me.

I'd also like to thank the the mods and admins of this Web site. It is really nice to have a place to go and share your enthusiasm with other collectors. They appreciate the ups and downs more than anyone.

So, year 2 of Kennedy searching starts today.....

If you're going to give up the Halves, I would recommend nickels. I search both myself. While you are correct that there aren't many Silver War Nickels out there, there are still a few. I average two per box. In addition to the wartime nickels, I usually find 30 to 40 other pre 1960 nickels. And for a real treat, every three boxes or so, I find a Buffalo with a readable date (yeah the original). Whatever you decide, best of luck!

A couple weeks ago I gave a shot at nickels and ordered my first box of them. I got 36 pre-1960 including 3 silver, and 1 1920 buffalo. The buffalo was right at the end of the roll, so when I picked it up I was like, "hey there!"

I hope to order another box soon.

    searching

My half dollar searching has ground to a halt for a while, after great luck at my home town bank,( about 40% silver) they ran out of rolls so I started searching the town I live in. Out of about 8 banks I got 3 rolls to search and found 3 or 4 silver clads. only one bank in town carried half rolls, that was the three I got. Now I have to figure out how to get to a town 30 miles away during banking hours, the real challenge. Oh well!! ;)

See if a bank in your town can order them for you. It may save you a trip
