I came across this penny and it has some damage I admit. My Microscope is broken so the pictures are from my phone. Sorry. The indentation did have the piece sticking up above the surface of the coin but when my Microscope fell off the table I jumped and everything went to the floor and when i picked it up it had fallen off. Any thoughts? Thanks 2021-04-28 22.05.35.jpg Screenshot_2021-04-28-22-03-12.png Screenshot_2021-04-28-22-03-26.png

You say that the piece fell off? It could be a lamination error. Do you have the piece so you can take a photo of it next to the penny?

    I'm thinking possible lamination

    I disagree
I see this, I think I see a continuation of the lamination which simply hasn't fallen off yet. Plus, the way the design elements look in the ST of states and the ER of America. I think it's a linear lamination. I think it's pretty cool

I'm with the lamination crew based on the photo posted by @Evan Saltis. I saw the same thing when I first looked at the OP's pics.

It looks like a now unretained lamination to me... As per before, can we get a pic of the 'bit' that fell off?

I'll look around my chair. it's definitely around my chair. Will post it soon as I find it.

Lamination went through my thoughts first but I believe it was damaged by the bottom right side of the groove where metal is on that side. I’m not convinced that the damage tore the metal off completely. I’m thinking the piece fell off after it was damaged and that’s what’s causing the letters to look like they do. I by no means claim to be an expert at this.

    I thought PMD at first.

Looks like a lamination... What Evan said. Worth like $0.50. It's a pretty neat find, and I always like to find errors like that, no matter how valuable they are.

EDIT: that is if it is in fact a lamination.

98% it's a lamination error but this is IMHO
