I purchased some of these cans when they came it was a bundle of 100 plus of them. Some are mint condition and never been used. The majority have very minor circulation issues and a few show a little wear. I copied this off of the internet to get a little history and I changed nothing. Southern Oil Stores was a Jacksonville, FL based gasoline marketer that was founded in 1929 or so, and operated stations as far west as Jackson, MS and as far north as Richmond, VA. They used the United coupon program, along with other retailers (worked like S&H Green Stamps) from at least the early postwar era as late as 1955, possibly earlier and later. Last Dixie Vim stations in the chain closed in the 1980s, some individual stations taken over by local owners and lasted longer.
I enjoy this kind of stuff almost as much as coins. My wife has a chest in the attic from a great great aunts home that is just papers, letter, receipts and such. But there is a small journal in that chest that I just love to read. It has passages in it like, “Sarah the cow collateral to the bank for ten dollars for spring seed”.... That sort of thing. I love that sort of thing.
It says on the reverse that if redeemed on localities that prohibit their redemption for products/goods where a license would be required, or taxes would have to be paid on the goods, it can only be redeemed for cash. So it sets a cash value of $0.005 on this coupon, or about $0.002 per coupon.
