    Good evening everybody,

Last week a very special rare coin came into my possession, I´m going to tell you a little about it.

The coin is special because there are only three known pieces of this coin known.

The coin is the 1961 gold coin made to commemorate the 150 years of the birth of Jon Sigurdsson. The coin was designed by Jordundur Palsson.

The coin weighs 8.96 grams of 22 K gold and minted in the Royal mint in London. The coin was minted in 10.000 pieces.

Now the reason why my coin is rare is because it´s a proof version. The coin was never minted as proofs. There are three of this known to exist as I said. One in the royal mint one in the Icelandic numismatic museum and third one with me. My coin as considered the second best copy around.

I am still waiting for some gear to be able to photograph it correctly so these pictures must do.

Congratulations. If you could provide a little more information about how you came to acquire the coin it would make an interesting story, I'm sure.

    Thanks everyone,

The coin came from a man who used to work for the goverment of Iceland. It was given to him by the royal mint.

I had done some reasearch on storys and myths about the coin and found out one gent who knew the man who suppositly owned one and everything worked from there.

Very interesting and a story I have not heard before.
I really like this coin design and it is one of my favorite coins in my collection/
I have a "non-proof" version in a NGC MS-67 grade with an Eliasberg pedigree.
Also I was unaware of it being minted in London. Seems like I read it was minted in Copenhagen, Denmark.

    Thank you silver eagle,

Very good grade on that coin. I´m looking into buying some samples of the coin now. I have just been doing some research on this coin regarding the fakes that was made in the 70´s.

Regarding the proof. This one is a once in a lifetime coin. There is another story of a proof that is thought to be out there but in really bad state. The one that the Icelandic numismatic musium owns is not in a good state or at least not as near as mine. So mine would be the second best one around. If the one in the royal mint has been kept in a safe place and nothing happened to it.

    siggi,
I checked my reference books and it states that the coin was struck at the Copenhagen mint...... are you sure about your statement that it was minted by the Royal Mint in London?

Also my K&M "Standard Catalog of world gold coins" does note that there are "proofs" of the 500 Kronur but does not list any mintage numbers.

    Hey again silver,

I´m 100% sure it was minted in the royal mint in london. The K&M has the proof but the price is way off as there are only three known. I have sent them a letter asking for some explenation on how they came obout finding out the price as none as been sold. should be blank as well.

You can chekc this link out from the national bank of icleand. Has all the coins ever minted from them in there.

were it not for the provenance to the Mint employee I would ask if you are sure that it is not one of the very first coins struck from a die resulting in a proof-like strike.

that being said, I believe your story and there are definitely instances of people close to the government being presented with proof or sometimes specimen strikes of new coins.

Sig... The right thing to do is to enjoy the coin, during your lifetime. Then will it to a icelandic museam. Traci

Hey Mike, I know what you mean about this being a first strike on a new die, But the coin is more then that when you see it. I have had it checked out by the museum and it´s confirmed a proof.

I know and I hope I will be able to do that when my days are over :)

If you dont try well you wont know. Nice try :)
