I'm sorry if this is a frequently asked question, but I wanted some opinions on this. From what I know personally, I thought ANACS was the best for this specific grading purpose, while NGC and PCGS focus on bigger picture pieces, but I don't know if this is accurate or not. Would it be more beneficial to send more notable errors and varieties to ANACS, or either NGC or PCGS? I know that PCGS slabbed coins can drive more of a premium both when being grading or buying graded pieces, but would it make much of a difference in this application? This question is more so for my own personal collection of ungraded pieces. I'm assuming that there are a lot of variables at play with this question, but feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
ANACS will attribute nearly anything. The others are more selective (top 100, hot 50, etc) At least that's my understanding.
Depends if it's a varity PCGS or NGC attributes that is the better choice, but.. ANACS attribs ALL VAMs and other varities while pcgs and ngc only do the most "popular"
If PCGS or NGC won't do the variety it vary likely has little to no value in the market. If you really want it on there you can do it if you want but it generally isnt a value adder and are likely leaving money behind if it is a nice coin
I believe you are correct, of course as the others note, if you are worried about resale, PCGS is the one to go to, but for your personal collection and variety / error attribution, I think ANACS is probably the best, I've actually had decent luck with ICG too, lol. Rick Stachowski (esteemed CT member) turned me on to this site run by the Combined Organization of Numismatic Error Collectors of America, and I'm considering sending some coins in for attribution / assessment (it's very reasonable) You can even post photos / questions on the site for insight - http://board.conecaonline.org/index.php
This question is more so focused on my personal collection, so this helps! I will have to check out that site, as numismatic errors are my favorite thing to collect in this hobby. EDIT: It just clicked that the site is CONECA, which I do know of haha, but not very well in terms of what they have to offer. Thanks for referring it!
Maybe I'm a bit confused by the answers...assuming I interpreted the question correctly ...on whether ANACS was the best/better TPG company to use for varieties and errors. Seemed the answers were more to which/what varieties and errors, et al, that ANACS and the others would attribute, or if they would at all...and I thought he was wanting to know if ANACS would do the best/better job with their grading. Remember, they're going to grade the entire coin...they're only going to attribute the variety or error. To me, that's two different things. Easy to learn what each TPG will grade by just checking their websites...but not so easy to know if ANACS...or which other TPG...will better focus the right skill personnel, attention and time do the more accurate attribution for more of the "little stuff" (but still important to many). As long as most of the more common attributions are equal across TPG services, to me it's which one do you like best for grading. If it's something that only one TPG attributes, then gotta go with that one.
You have to ask and pay extra for variety attribution. Here is about a $100 miss (presumably) on the submitter not asking for the D/D RPM.
If NGC or PCGS doesn't do it, they aren't going to do it at all. If they say they do it, then they will do it for a fee. So like with VAM Morgan dollars. If PCGS doesn't do that VAM, then they aren't doing it. So if you were a VAM collector and wanted them all slabbed, I'd say ANACS is your best choice ( I don't know how many ICG does to be fair, they might do a lot of them also) in order to have them all attributed and in uniform slabs across your collection instead of some PCGS, Some NGC and some ANACS to finish it out for the ones PCGS and NGC won't do. Resale values aside, PCGS and NGC just have things they aren't interested in doing and won't do and if your collection includes those items and you want them all in the same style slabs and labels then you pretty much have to go with who will or wind up with a mishmash of different slabs. PCGS and NGC have their "registry set" collection things going on and that drives their markets for the most part, they can be selective on what they include and don't include because I think they are catering to that segment of collectors trying to build top sets in their slabs. My opinion PCGS and NGC are focusing on their own registry set markets. ANACS is focusing on attributing things and don't give a hoot about registry set competition. And yeah PCGS slabs sell better, because the perception in the market is that's all they allow in their registry sets so it must be "top of the line" because registry builders want the best examples to get the top ranked sets. It's business models and it all really depends on how you collect. If I were collecting slabbed VAMs and I wanted it uniform in appearance I'd be going to ANACS to get them ALL attributed. Ive said it many times though and I'll say it again here. I don't own a single TPG graded coin and may never own one. I don't sell from my collection, and I don't need their validation or opinion on my coins. However a time may come where I want to buy a very specific coin like a key date that's known counterfeited and I might buy slabbed for peace of mind when shelling out the bucks, but other than that particular circumstance I see TPG grading as a waste of money for most everything.
