Because in 1916 and a number of years after, it was only worth just a dime. That was probably/could have been, when it was defaced.
So the 1916-D dime is valuable? Maybe I should go out and buy a metal detector and start looking. I'm sure there's a buried bucket of them somewhere just waiting for me to find. Much like the $10 million in gold coins the couple in California found a number of years ago when taking their dogs out for a squirt.
This was due to one reason only, which has been the bane of every male since Adam and Eve: Another fool thought he was in love and felt the quickest way to connubial bliss Nirvana was a shiny bauble on a chain present (when your pockets are empty and your libido is on overtime, get the drill out and attack that piece of change in your pocket...they fall for it every time. Note no Viagra back then ). Dumazz. I know. For 53 years I have paid for that shiny bauble on a chain. The receiver turned into a ball and chain.

I believe it was a tradition in some cultures to nail a new coin on the front door frame for good luck and happiness. Jim
If that in fact was a D 1916, I sure hope it was every bit worth it and brought them much good luck over the years. I'd require them to throw in a few ghosts and spirits as well. I happen to like and enjoy them too.
