I was chasing gold type earlier this decade when gold was around $350 to $400 an ounce. Hindsight says I should have chased the $20's some more, but I'm thankful for what I have. I basically wanted at least one of each denomination, just didn't get a $3 gold piece - yet. Maybe one day I'll see one I like. Some of the photos can definitely use a retake as well. http://picasaweb.google.com/ElmerFusterpuck/Gold#
For some reason that 1889 $2.5 AU58 really caught my eye! As did the 1880S MS63! Great set! Keep it going!
Gorgeous set. Mine's XF-AU but yours is significantly higher at AU-MS. I use the NGC Registry as my guide to what a type set is composed of. For gold in that date range they list 21 coins. I've got 20, missing the $20 St Gaudens 1907 High Relief (I won't get that one). You've got 18 and besides the $3 it looks like you are missing (according to NGC) the $10 Indian Head, No Motto. I was slower getting to the gold coins so I was buying when gold was in the $700-800 range.
Very nice ! Some real standouts in there. :thumb: Check that 1911-D $20 for a repunched mintmark. Sometimes they command a premium !
That is a nice selection of US gold coins. PS- don't we all wish we had bought some gold 'back then' when it was a lot cheaper...
