Today, while browsing for a high grade buffalo for a type set, I stumbled upon this PCGS 1938-D MS-66. I like it, it has a nice strike and some good eye appeal . It's for $77, and I don't subscribe to greysheet, so I don't know the "current value", can someone tell me? (original larger picture shown here http://www.executivecoin.com/popup.aspx?src=images/Product/large/4248.jpg)
I don't have the greysheet in front of me, but I checked Heritage. The last 5 auctions (Nov 17 & 24) the highest price was $56 (PCGS), and lowest $47 (NGC). The other auctions were within that price range, so it seems like $77 is a little high.
If you're signed up with Heritage there are 4 up for auction right now: 1938-D 5C MS66 PCGS. PCGS Population (25260/1423). NGC Census: (17682/1649). Mintage: 7,020,000. Numismedia Wsl. Price for ... Buffalo Nickels
If you are in to toned coins, then I would sit and wait until you can find a MS66 toner in the $100-$225 range. (There are some nice ones out there) If you want a more original, or blast white coin, then what raider said is true...I'd sit on your hands and wait for that $50 one to come along
My advice is not to buy a 1938-D Buffalo Nickel in MS66. The coin is extremely common and always will be. The current population is (43,052/3,079). I don't ever see the value of this coin increasing much and the MS67 is very affordable at about $125-$150. If you really want a Buffalo Nickel type coin, wait for an MS67 that floats your boat and let those MS66 drift on by.
Don't know if it's the 38 that you want but for a just really great conditioned one, you should be able to find many cheaper than that. Not only is $77 a bit high but if you have to pay postage and handling and/or insurances, it will be a lot higher too.
Greysheet only goes up to MS65 on Buffalos so it'll be of no help to you for an MS66. These are very very common so take your time and hold out for one that has really good eye appeal, is fairly priced and has absolutely no problems! Given the price of these and the fact they are always readily available, you can afford to be patient with your purchase and that will assure that you're ultimately really happy with the one you eventually settle on.
