Why I stayed in the coin realm. 2012 or early 2013 I met a guy in a coin shop while I was out with my grandmother and he offered to send me some coins. This was within my first year of starting up so had this not happened who knows where I’d be at. she gave her address (not mine) and this letter along with a baggie of quite a number of coins. This month is my 2 year CT anniversary. Here is where I tell you that I keep every letter I receive.
This guy specifically was amazed. I had some proof coins with me I showed him. He asked if my parents had anything to do with coins, and when I said no he was shocked. At the time I tried to play it cool but 11 year old me was so pumped. Remember those days? oh, anyways, this thread is open to being slightly derailed. This is a little CT birthday party. I found a few letters from CT members but I won't share If theres anything I should photograph in my collection just ask and I'll see what I have. I really need to get motivated to take pics and I think you guys could convince me probably. I have finals this week so when I'm not working on things pertaining to that I'm kind of braindead.
Very cool, @Evan Saltis. It's good that you stayed with the hobby, unlike somebody I used to know who ended up becoming a Reddit edgelord.
Ominous sounding. Glad you're among us Evan. And I like your avatar.........looks like my 'Paisley' who now resides with my daughter and husband. I have visitation rights.........
Very nice to remember these things. As time progresses, there will be fewer photo albums and physical letters to hang on to... or to pass on to future generations. EDIT: Do you still have the coins?
Evan, glad you decided to stick with the coin hobby!!! Also a big "ATTA GIRL" for your grandmother for taking you to a coin shop to begin with!! You're one fortunate grandson!!!
When I was in elementary school, I would save my birthday money and my Uncle would take me to the local coin shop. The dealer always managed to find something extra for me to take home. One time, I had just completed the 20th Century type set and he gave me both Whitman Deluxe 19th Century albums (They were used, but sure were a lot nicer than the Whitman folders). I still have those albums with many of the coins I bought from him 45+ years later. He always seemed to have time to explain some of the history or tell an interesting story about the particular type coin I was buying. I really believe if he wouldn't have taken the time to encourage me as a kid, I wouldn't have stuck with the hobby. That's why I try to spend some time answering newbie questions on here. Hopefully, I can help them like people have helped me.
