Been going through coins I put away years ago because I gave up trying to ID them. This one should be easier than it turned out to be. Maybe an Ae of Philip V of Macedon as there are kind of similar issues, but not 100% sure. And here it is: Obv: Head of (young) Herakles right Rev: Horse with rider rearing right, B - A above, Φ below Size: 15mm, 3.5gms
Nice lookin' coin, Brian. I found some issued by Perseus, but the horse isn't prancing like yours. Close, but not quite there? https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2656280 Wildwinds has one too: https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/macedonia/kings/perseus/t.html
Naumann cataloged the type as Philip V in this 2014 listing: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1872561 KINGS OF MACEDON. Philip V (221-179 BC). Ae. Uncertain mint in Macedon. Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin. Rev: B - A / Φ. Horseman riding right, raising right hand. SNG Alpha Bank 1061. Condition: Very fine. Weight: 2.9 g. Diameter: 15 mm.
Thanks @TIF. Much appreciated. I tried to refine my acsearch to include "horse rearing right" with no luck. I'm pretty sure that "horseman riding right" is not really a proper description of the reverse. Oh well. Anyways, glad to see your voice on Cointalk again. Hopefully we will see it more often in the future.
Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you have to slog through a thousand pictures. I was shockingly lucky with the first search try of "ae herakles horseman b a phi" which by some miracle returned just one result... the coin I posted. It was a jaw-droppingly rare and remarkable event. I'm going to go buy a lottery ticket now .
