In the listing, the seller says, "100% GENUINE 1874-CC U.S. Trade Dollar," so of course it's real.

Honestly, I think the average person that isn’t consumed with coins like we are understands this. They have heard a Trade Dollar is rare and valuable. They heard somewhere that a Carson City mint is desirable. And the icing on the cake is the coin is super shiny! This must be a great deal..... Only to discover later when they take their fabulous purchase to sell that they have purchased a piece that is just shy of junk. By then Mister super polish is long gone.

Yes, I think it's plated as well and it's gonna sell for top dollar. I feel bad for the buyer but when you start paying over $25-$50 for a coin you really should be doing some research to find out where your money is going and what the resale value is gonna look like for you when you sell. Crazy ebay bidders, for shame, for shame! :D

If it's real, why isn't it in a slab?
    It looks soooo awful.

My first post was tongue-in-cheek.As far as it looking awful, that's an understatement. I haven't looked at it close enough to determine if it is genuine because I can't look at it that long.

There's a bidding war going on and there's a bidder with over 1600 feedbacks bumping the bids up with around 20 bids. Why would an experienced bidder do that ?

Wow. What's interesting is the details are really sharp so it if left original it would've been very valuable. But maybe it had been cleaned already and they figured may as well go all the way. Never seen anything like it. Almost looks like a reverse proof in the pics. It's not like somebody polished up a worn one. This was a good one at one time.

Obviously beauty is in the eye of all those bidders who fought each other over that coin

It may be a fake. I bought one a while back. Not that same date. Had a friend look at it. He said it was a fake. The coin had a grainy surface and other problems. The cost was cheap at the garage sale. I think the above coin's surface was polished to cover the grainy surface. The weight would tell the other problems with it.

I was thinking the same thing, looks like XF details. Coin might have been toned very dark/black and some prior owner wanted to clean it up.

This morning on my way to the post office I passed a chrome plating business & it made me wonder... Do any CT members know of anyone chrome plating a U.S. coin?...I'd enjoy seeing perhaps a common date (1921) Morgan, chrome plated..He! He!
    Might it be illegal?
