Hello, new to the forum, but a long time lurker, and just had to ask... regarding the "Breen" label on certain U.S. coinage. I personally collect Jefferson nickels and have recently purchased an MS62 1982-P Breen-2811 (Wiped Obverse) 5 Full Steps/Obv-Rev '82. I realize that an individual named Walter Breen is highly regarded in the hobby for gold piece analysis, but am confused on this entry on a recent Jefferson nickel. Is there a Breen nickel catalog that this is referring too? On a side note, the above graded coin I purchased on ebay for less than $2.00. It is graded by SEGS. (Recently a PCGS version of this coin went for $320.00 MS65 FS) I have read a lot about the poor quality of SGS coins, but it seems to me this SEGS company is very good at what it does especially nickels. Does anyone have any opinions Thank you.
Breen is the Walter Breen you heard about...he cataloged the coins and gave them numbers (Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins) SGS and SEGS are not the same...I have seen SEGS coins that were graded right or near if but most of what I've seen hasn't been good...the reason some like SEGS is because they do alot of vartietys for coins... As for the value...if you sold the coin in the SEGS holder...you wouldn't get much more than you paid IMO...but if you got that coin in a PCGS holder...you might get more. Its just a fact (I don't think its good but its a fact) that people will pay more for NGC and PCGS holders than others...and not many trust SEGS. Speedy
Thank you for the information. I found the Breen volume you mentioned of all places listed on the Wal-Mart site (new for $79.00 no less). Should probably order it.. thank you again...
