I have a bunch of those I have found in circulation - most are coated in aluminum or something.

    I agree with intense heat.

Definitely corroded and damaged. That being said, it only cost you a cent so you won't break the bank keeping it :)
    Keep searching.

I have kept the ones I found for novelty. They're just fun to have.

    I'm thinking a wire brush/wheel caused it.

first thing that came to my mind was "sand blasting" someone cleaning bricks or rusty metal on something did a cent just to see what it would do. Just my 2 cents worth (actually 1 cent) but spend it or keep it, it will always be a conversation piece.

    A strong acid did that.

IMHO it looks like someone attempted to clean it with a chemical not very well suited for copper.

I find a number of them in the Coinstar return slots. Not quite that bad though.

I view it as interesting, I would place it a 2x2 and keep it. Personal preference in my opinion.

Damaged from exposure to an acidic environment. Keep it as an example of what is not valuable...I have many sample specimens of dryer coins, blistered surfaces and deterioration to show folks when the subject comes up...Spark

Experience will teach you that's acid.
