    This is true. There are official counterstamps (by governing authorities) in addition to unofficial, private ones (like this).

    I briefly worked in a jewelry store back in ‘91 and often had a few hours of downtime where I’d play with the engraving machine. I put my first initial on a bunch of nickels for no reason at all except practice, and boredom. So if you ever encounter some early-1990s vintage nickels with an engraved “R” on them, you’ll know their backstory. ;)
