I was searching some rolls of nickels the other day and I found this 2005 one that seems to be made only of copper. Can anybody tell me why are these coins this color because I even found some dimes that look like this and is it worth keeping?
Possible fire damage Looks like after-mint damage... possibly from fire. A good test would be to weigh it. Normal nickels are 5 grams (76 grains). Nickels are usually 75% copper and 25% nickel alloy. If it was all copper, it would weight more, since copper weighs more than nickel. If it weighs 5 grams, or less, it is after-mint damage.
What about these coins that I also put aside to find out more info, which I have found in other rolls.. The first one is a 2005 nickel and a 1975 nickel they both look gray in color and if you pass your fingers on them they feel rough..can you tell me why are these coins like this?
If you ionize CuNi for many hours at a high amperage. The copper will draw to the surface of the coin in many spots ??? Traci
