Found this in my "Box of Mystery"

    Ob: GEORGIVS III DE GRATIA
    Rev: ·M·B·F·ET·H·REX·F·D·B·ET·L·D·S·R·I·A·T·ET·E· 1789
It looks like the coin is patterned after a 1789 guinea, but this coin is clearly not gold. Looks like corroded copper. Edge is scalloped. ~24 mm, 3.5 g
Could this be a gaming token? I've heard those were sometimes made in the design of gold coinage. It doesn't look like a recent replica. Any guess as to when these were made? Thanks!

What you have was undoubtedly started off as a contemporary counterfeit of a gold guinea that was originally plated in gold. Someone likely became suspicious of the coin and saw fit to scallop part of the edge to find out; when it was confirmed it was indeed a fake they went ahead and scalloped the rest of the coin either just for the heck of it or to make it clear that it was in fact a counterfeit.

Perhaps it was used as a gaming token afterward for a while. We'll likely never know but at some point it appears to have been buried for a good while and then dug up. My guess is it was made in the 1790's or early 1800's. Value I would say is not much given its condition but it is historic and an interesting piece for sure.
