Here's one with an unexpected hat that has just arrived:

 

How do they do that? I imagine one would somehow affix the coin to some surface which would hold it in place, and then use tools akin to a hammer and chisels of various types to work the metal around, rather than removing any metal.

 

Actually it is a bit of an optical illusion - most of the design is deeply incuse and nothing is higher than the original surface, so not as difficult to do as you might expect.

This thread kinda stalled out for a long time, so I propose a theme change. Horses. This 1953 GB crown has head gear from the old theme and a horse for the new theme.

For some reason, I didn't record the weight but it is 36mm.
