Was in my 6th grade classroom and already a big history and politics buff...monitors were sent around to all rooms with the announcement, read by the teacher. We were sent home shortly after and was glued to the TV, including Oswald's live shooting by Jack Ruby on Sun morning. I remember the next year when my first 64 Kennedy-half flat-pak proof set ($2.10) arrived in the mail and I had purchased a special emerald-green Capital holder for it.
My father was in the Army and we moved a lot. I was in the 11th grade and 15. I was in American History class in Columbus, Georgia and remember that the principle announced over the intercom that President Kennedy had been shot and killed. Classes were ended and students were sent home for the next several days. I remember all the news articles on the TV and "John-John" saluting when his father's coffin was passing by. Many people thought we would have a nuclear war with Russia, but, thankfully at that time we were at peace, or so they said. I also remember watching LHO being shot. At 15, it was traumatizing. My father was on alert for a month and had to stay at Ft Benning.
I was a high school sophomore in English class when the school principal shocked everyone with the PA announcement of the shooting of President Kennedy. Our teacher Ms. Mudd was visibly distraught. It seems that every time I see a Kennedy half, that moment in time in class flashes across my mind.
I was finishing basic training at Lackland AFB and we were all issued weapons and on alert as they thought it might be the start of something more.
I was fortunate to see JFK in Philadelphia. JFK's motorcade was traveling down Penrose Ave in South Philly. I was 7.
