I got a great deal using "best offer" on a coin the other day. Almost cut the cost in half. Anyone have any strategies that work with this feature? BTW this guy has some REALLY nice Franklins with a "best offer" feature (I'd put in an offer but they are not my area). http://shop.ebay.com/blueridge1/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340 I never bought from him and I don't know him (I just stumbled across these) but his feedback is great.
Not knowing how Best Offer works, I would have to say the term is a misnomer. Buy it now (let's say $100) or best offer. Let's also say this is the third time that he put this coin up for auction - the other two times there were no takers. The odds of someone bidding on this coin are nil since the price is the same as the other two times. Near the end of the auction I put in my best offer of $1.00 which means I win this $100 coin. I'm sure we all know I'm not going to get this coin for $1.00. So when I see an auction that states buy it now or best offer I know that is not what the auction is all about.
Yea, Guess it is not a real "best offer". Still though if you offer greysheet bid on a nice coin you may get it.
I have won a few bullion coins using "best offer" function. I can't see where it hurts to try, especially when the auction is nearing a end.
It never hurts to try best offers - heck I typically do that at DLRC on some of the coins I look at. With best offer I determine what I am willing to pay and that is what I offer. Usually I get turned down, but have one a few this way. Now some of the ones I skip(not always) the seller will have a slabbed coin at twice what heritage(same quality of coin) or some dealers sell them for. I know they would think I am low balling them, so I usually do not waste my time on those "best offers".
I think it's a nice feature. If I see a "Buy It Now" that's close to what I would pay, what the heck - shoot a "best offer" over. You know you'll occasionally get a guy who really wants to get rid of whatever it is and maybe at a price that's a "steal".
Most of the ones I've tried had a MINIMUM best offer. Apparently sellers can set that wherever they want. Some won't even accept an offer that's more than 10% off their asking price.
