    Welcome Jimstagg!
I don't have many bust halves but I do have a question regarding two varieties that I have.Maybe you or someone else with knowledge in this area can give me the answer.
I have 2 1832's pictured below. The one on the left clearly has asterisk type stars while the right one, even taking into account the extra wear, has normal flat stars.I would like to properly label them as to type..thanks!

    responce to bust hafs

the bust half on left appears to be a 0.106 and the one on right is likely a 0.108. i need to see the other side to see where the T and I relationship are and also to see where the 3 As are pointing to the milling around the edge . in oder to confirm what overton varitey they are.
from 1794 t0 1836 these coins where made on a screw press. they where somewhat made by hand. the dies where made 3 different procdures. 1 pressing the image liberty on obv and eagle on rev 2nd then the stars where added on obv and the legend on back 3d was the date on obv and 50 c on rev. this is why there is so many varities or die marriages.
so answer to your ? when they made the stars where hammered or striked into the die one side might have been lower than the other side of the planchet. or in some casses real low or real high if real high they whear off guicker making them flat. some times the striked the die real lite and the stars are flat and lady liberty real precise with no wear. that ia why these coins are so fun to collect.

    jimstagg,
I'll take some pictures of the reverses tomorrow night.(sat.) too tired tonight, but I'd really appreciate your identification so that I can properly label them. How extensive is your collection? I'm sure the folks in here would like to see some pics if possible, especially any unusual or rare ones!
    Thanks

OK...hopefully you're still around. These are in the same order as above..left "asterisk" stars, right flat stars. Can you tell if they're actually 0.106 and 08?
    Thanx

I would question the authenticity of the Half on the right! Although it is in better condition, there is a lack of or very weak denticles around the edge on both the Obverse and Reverse.

    huntsman,
I can't believe that I never noticed that the denticles were missing on this coin.I took a closer look under a magnifying glass and can see faint traces of them on the reverse but the rims on both sides are worn almost flat.It does have the correct edge lettering.HALF OF A DOLLAR,etc.I believe that this is a pretty common date for bust halves so it's hard to believe anyone would take the time to counterfeit one but who knows? Maybe just a die variety or unusual wear.I don't know.Anyone?

    Mikjo0,

There appears to be enough of a rim that the denticles should be evident on the Obverse as well and again, this is something that would make me question it's authenticity! It also appears that the Half in question is smaller in diameter than the other Half. I thought that this would be hard to tell because it appears from the upper left picture in your 2nd post, the the camera was tilted slightly when the picture was taken. However, when I scrolled down the page and lined-up the bottoms of the coins with top of my Browser, then I could see that it was just an optical illusion. I then scrolled back up and lined-up the tops of the coins with the top of my Browser and you can see that there appears to be a difference in the size of the two coins.

It is somewhat hard and sometimes impossible to identify a fake from pictures but closeups of the full Obverse and Reverse might help!

the coin on the left appears as the 0verton 106 R1
the one on the right is the overton 108. rarity 3 (rarity 3 means there is only 201 to 500 of this die marriage ) and one of the atributes for this coin marriage is little or no milling or dentils
i can't give further judgement with these pics are to small. to see the cross bars and stripes for further identification. jim
