That was a typo on my part. It's a family -- the Langbords.

Here's an update on the pending case and some background:

A google search will uncover a lot more, if you are so inclined...Mike

Do you have a picture of it in the slab?
The slab must be 2 inches thick!

Beautiful error! That is absolutely fantastic.

But I am a bit confused - how is it graded but not slabbed? I understand that it will obviously not fit in a normal slab, but doesn't it defeat the purpose of the slab to not have the coin in the slab as (theoretically) any coin could be put in the original coin's place?

I think it would be pretty hard to duplicate this error with 9 planchets. In any event, I am going to try and get it encapsulated since I understand NGC now has thicker holders, or at least get a special clear box for it for protection.

I agree it would be pretty hard, but counterfeiters are pretty clever. As most of the value of a holder is in its authentication of a particular coin and grade, it seems rather pointless to issue a holder that does not have the coin referenced within the holder.

Regardless, this an observation on the holder, not about your coin(s). That error is stunning.

A beautiful capped die error(s). I would think that NGC would put it in some durable plastic holder, seal it with a NGC label and make some band around the plastic, similar to what they did with GSA Morgans left in the GSA holders.

    Nice going, Charmy.

I almost wonder if this was done purposely at the Mint by whoever got it out of there. My question would be what would they say in a bank if that popped up in a coin counting machine? Hand that to someone for a purchase at Walmart or McDonalds and it would be accepted.
And as already noted how come the USMint isn't having someone investigate how that did git out and just who is smuggling coinage out of the Mint? I would think they would wonder just how much is being done like this.

I don't think how this got out of the mint is that big of a mystery. The nine strikes that caused this would have happened in a few seconds and then the piece came off the die of its own accord, as is evident by the frct that there are no pry marks on the piece from trying to remove it from the die. It then ended up in the large bag at the end of the run. This wouldn't be discovered until the bag of cents was sent through the rolling machine at String & sons, Brinks or whoever else might have done the initial rolling. At that point it was found by someone that was not a government employee and not under the threat of losing a gov't job for taking it. Having an error from the mint is nothing like possessing coins that the government insists were never issued.
