Sorry if this is a dumb question. I see these "Unopened Proof Sets" on EBAY from '50's & 60's and since I couldn't collect before my birth I wanted to know if there was such a thing, As far as the Boxes I have from the mint.. I have NEVER had a SEALED (Glued Envelope) Mint/Proof Set... Did They SEAL them back in the 50's? I don't think so and don't believe that nobody has looked inside an envelope that may have a errors etc... But since I wasn't there..?? And if the mint didn't seal them how can Ebay let that scam go on.. I have seen Auctions where they say "Sealed from the Mint" Please note that you can get great deals on these type items on ebay if you have the time... But I would never think the set being sold has not been cherry picked.... I got a pile of Mint Sets to fill some holes 80's - 90's for Face Value Plus Shipping the other day..!!
No such thing especially on eBay. No such thing especially on eBay. This is a pipe dream to believe any longer esp. on eBay. There was once boxes of unopened proof sets there were legit but even those are mostly likley opened and then sealed or re-packaged in copy cat envelopes. Yes we now have those. I have had groups of 1970 mint sets sealed and thought (99%) they were original. So I would take it to the bank that anything on eBay is contrived. Some one else may know if and when the mint sealed envelopes and if so when they stopped. eBay is there for one reason (99%) of the time to sell you the illusion of getting more when in fact you will get less. I believe this is (100%) true when it comes to claims of original rolls, proof sets, die varieties and so called rare coins.
The flat pack proof sets from 1955 onward were supplied in sealed brown envelopes. However, any unscrupulous person could purchase new brown envelopes & reseal old opened sets.
Hi, you see the empty coin covers for sale there, it's a wonder that they don't put un-sealed envelopes from the mint up for bid. ss
I was searching n.f. string rolls on the internet about 3 months ago and came across a site where you could but the empty n.f. string paper and a roller, so not too much of anything there has much integrity, ust don't give up on humanity all together. There alot of honest people out there that won't be underhanded. SS
