I believe the 100 Trillion notes were real and actually issued, but worthless. I have one that I used in my economics classes to illustrate hyperinflation. There were never any official figures, but Forbes estimated that by November of 2008 the annual rate of inflation was 89.7 x 10^21 percent (89.7 sextillion, 89,700,000,000,000,000,000,000%.) In July of 2008 a study found that an egg cost $50,000,000,000, the value of the note in this giveaway. I illustrated the point to my class with a hypothetical story: Suppose a poor Zimbabwean who had not eaten in three days were walking alone down a lonely rural road and a truck came by and hit a bump. Suppose that out of that truck bounced a large cardboard box, but the truck went on without stopping. Then suppose the man ran to the large box and found it was completely filled with $100 Trillion dollar notes. The hungry man would have been happy because he could dump all the money on the road and try to trade the box for something to eat. So in a sense, yes, they were fantasy notes, but it was the Zimbabwe government doing the fantasizing.

This contest seems stressful, and I didn't even participate or know it was happening - at the time.

    Congrats P D! Don't spend it all
    in one place. ; )

Yeah, I created a monster this time. I like to experiment with these contests and occasionally throw out something a little different from my usual monthly “pick your prize” contests.

Experimentation can get messy. But it’s all in good fun. :)

Yep. That’s why I refer to these as “instant” giveaways, or, as I believe you described your last one, “flash” contests.
