I've been trying to focus in on a certain coin, denomination or class of coins that stands out for me. In my pursuit of being a better collector I am wondering what others collect. Here's the question in a nutshell. You can answer any way you want, that's why this isn't a poll. What do you collect? Silver dollars? Gold buffalos? Pre-1965 90% silver U.S. coinage? Buffalo nickels? Jefferson nickels? Walking Liberties? Pre-1933 gold coins? Lincoln cents? World coins? Coins of your country only? Nothing specific? Whatever you see and like? Anyone? Also, I would like to see some collections as I have been privy in the past to occasionally see some great ones, so if you have an album. Please let me know so I have some direction. I have an album of my collection, of course it's not everything I collect but it's a fair example. Right now my collection is a bit of a hodge podge mix and I want to tighten it up a bit, that's the reason for this post. thx
I really didn't know what to collect when I first started. So I started to work on a type set of US coins, collecting one of each major design, seemed to help me figure out what I liked and what I didn't. Since I still like a lot of different coins, I just focused down my type set into my current 1909 Mint Set project since that year has many designs that I really like (Indian Cents, Barber coinage, Lincolns, Indian Gold, St. Gaudens Gold). Here's my set so far: http://tinyurl.com/dj7nbg
I collect MAINLY two things. Gold Indians of any denomination (MS62+), and Morgan Dollars (MS65+) I've gotten sidetracked on my serious collecting and have been working on other things, and have been patiently saving my money for an proof indian cent (as I'm also working on a type set) After I purchase my proof indian, then I hope to buy a MS66 morgan, and at least one gold indian, before 2010 is over.
i dont realy know as long as its silver or gold with the a small price tag and i like the coin now you have me thinking dave
At first I bought anything that I saw. I was under the notion of Quantity > Quality. I had almost everything that I could pick up cheap. Now I have it narrowed down to Barber Halves and Jefferson/Buffalo Nickels.
Fret, in the final analysis. i collect almost any coin from any country or era. its the history in my hands i like. Traci
I collect what I find interesting. Usually that is world coins, but I also pick up U.S. commemoratives and proof sets sometimes. Picking up 'neat' things here and there can actually be a really fun way to collect. I keep almost everything I buy (unless it's a double), so that way I can go through my stuff and sometimes find something I bought years ago and start collecting it again.
I collect what appeals to my eyes. Although, for now, I dont collect any german or russian coins. Favorites seem to be Mexico, Italy, & South Americans.
I'm currently focusing on Roman lead tesserae (tokens) and contemporary imitations/counterfeits of Roman coins (primarly 3rd century AD). PB Roman Tessera 14mm x 14mm Mercury holding bag and caduceus clasped hands Rostowzew 2677, cf Munich 518 (round) Struck Imitation of Divus Claudius II altar type c. 270-273 […]HVI[…] radiate bust r. […]/N[…] (retrograde) exceptionally stylized altar, with X at center and dots in angles
I too collect shiny things and lots of memories. But what is a fire stick? I also collect bills in a thing called a mail box, loud noses from a substance called wife and most of all I collect irritations from those things called relatives. Inbetween that, coins.
Very Nice Collection. I collect coins & paper money. http://s817.photobucket.com/albums/zz95/edwinrd117/
Wow, there are some amazing collections on this thread!! I don't even know where to start. Amazing!! Beautiful IHC, Barber quarters, Lincoln cents, gold indians, the 2.5, the $5 and the beautiful $10, that's one of my all time favs, then there's the $20 dollar gold pieces. All graded, 1909 beauties!! illini420!! Man that is one beautiful collection! Then there's cucumbor, hope I didn't mess up your name. Ancients galore, really beautiful ancients! Leaves me speechless! That's great, I hope to see more ppl post! Seeing collections which are totally focused inspire me. Sure I still have a very long ways to go, but just seeing such nice collections at least moves me to taking more pics of what I already have. much thanks!!
I collect nicely-toned Jefferson nickels. If you are not familiar with the series, you would be amazed at the variation in the various types of toning that can occur on these coins.
go after the early commems. but buy whatever else you like (for me Morgans) the commems. are dead now and have alot of potential considering the market and low mintages
As my signature will tell you, I am hoping to collect common Morgans in relatively good condition next year.
