Hi all I wanted to share my 4th Cent Struck on Thin Planchet in my collection. I wonder how this one was discovered: someone weighing their pocket change? It's close enough to the weight of a copper cent that I can see it getting missed pretty easily.
Struck on thin planchet??? The 1997 cent is supposed to weigh 2.5 grams so this coin is only .02 grams underweight, and the mint tolerance is .1 grams so a 2.4 gram coin should be considered to be normal. This is an absolutely normal cent, it is NOT a mint error. What it is is a certification error. (And a submission error. )

I sent a group of 1977 COPPER Cents to NGC; they came back 2.3 to 2.7 Grams, which is underweight for a COPPER cent. I didn't even notice that this was a 1997 Cent - if the coin is dated 1997, then Conder is obviously correct, and you should return the coin to us for a full refund. I think you probably bought this on Ebay, which is where we would have put it up for auction. My apologies for the 'error' - I make up a PCGS blue box of slabbed errors for eBay, and I know that we've put up some of the 1977 Coppers - this 1997 slipped by me...... Please return it - I assume that it was in the group of 1977's sent to NGC, and that they just slabbed it as part of the submission.

Talking of thin planchets... I have a jefferson nickel weighing 4.72 grams (not 5), a seated lib quarter weighing 5.64 grams (not 6.2), a franklin half weighing 12.14 grams (not 12.5), and a peace dollar weighing 26.31 grams (not 26.73). Why!? They are all worn, is that why? I also have a worn nickel weighing 5.15 grams instead of 5? WHYYYYY! Haha lol thanks. -SC.
My 1997 penny weighs 2.41 grams .09 is a big difference compared to 2.48 or .02 under. But your saying it's not an error being underweight like that?
Your 1997 Cent is a Copper Plated Zinc cent. They should weigh 2.5 grams. 2.41 is within tolerance. Copper planchet cents weigh 3.11 grams. The slab I acquired was a mistake made by the grading company. Read the entire thread. Do you understand the difference?
The mint's tolerance for zinc cents appears to be +/- 0.10g, so 2.40g - 2.60g is the range that the mint finds acceptable. The law says there is a tolerance for zinc cents of 0.13g, so 2.37g - 2.63g is the acceptable range.
