About a week ago, I noticed this trade dollar at auction on eBay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1875-S-TRA...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 The problems with it are obvious. I asked the seller for images of the edge reeding, he obliged. I politely explained why I believed the coin was fake, he thanked me, and added a comment to the listing that someone believed it was a counterfeit, but did not end the listing. I sent him a copy of the eBay rules about selling counterfeits being forbidden which was (apparently) ignored. I was very busy all week and did not get around to reporting it, figuring he would end the listing. Or nobody would bid. But as of today its up to 227.50! Oh well.
sorry those edge images did not enlarge. I'll have to fiddle with them but trust me the reeding is really bad!
I've done this several times... in 2 instances the sellers actually took down their listings and sent their raw coins in to a TPG to get them verified, both times they came back labeled 'Not genuine'.... Other times tho, it's not worth the effort because the seller either completely ignores me or starts a long rude tirade of messages about how his coin 'can't possibly be a fake, thank you very much' and besides, 'what do you know?' Well... I know that a coin that has an OBVIOUS casting line along the edge is a fake beyond a shadow of a doubt because coins are not cast, they're STRUCK!! I'ts just not worth the effort
This issue is getting worse by the day. The Bay is a crapshoot really. The sad part is the person acknowledged your comment, yet kept it for sale. Someone is out $300. I have wondered if I wanted to sell some of my collection and I always fault to no, not on the bay. I have a great rating as a buyer but have never sold anything. There are too many issues that I do not have time to deal with. It is sad really. All I can say is if I got it in hand and it was bad, the seller should refund it but I doubt the buyer knows any better.
I hope that the person who "won" it knows its a fake and is going to claim a refund and take it out of the numismatic fool. Or the seller has set himself up for a dissatisfied buyer, SNAD, and neg. f.b. I just can't believe that someone bought it thinking it's real! I guess my expectations about eBay buyers just aren't low enough, LOL.
Yeah I’ve always been on eBay I’ve had great luck there I buy a lot of stuff on there I want to coins but I don’t know much about the coin market on eBay. I’ve sold a few rolls and that’s about it right I just can’t figure out like how are these people shipping out with tracking on the post office tells me it’ll be five dollars to ship one point but I am supposed to be able to ship it for $.23 all the shipping crap like drives me nuts. I will start eBay was intended to keep people honest. So I’ve always trusted it may be the coin markets different I’m gonna learn
I've done this frequently with attribution errors and usually sellers are grateful. But occasionally they become hostile. I normally take the time and give my reasons. But if you explain that you can't have a type 2 curl on a 1796 Draped Bust and the seller insists it's a 1796, then what can you do?
I just informed another seller that his 1799 Large Cent is a 1798 S-187. The obverse is worn beyond identification, but the reverse is well known as The Fallen Berry. It is almost unique across all Draped Bust reverses with the berry left of O(N) FALLING below the stem. The almost is because of the 1801 NC-5 always seen with a huge CUD also has this "Fallen Berry," but is only visible on the highest grade specimens. Anyway, we'll see how he reacts. I suspect a newby who doesn't know any better with a low post count, though that has happened with some who knowingly prey on the inexperienced and have earned account bans already. They just create new accounts.
Very diplomatic way of handling it. Yes we get prayed on a lot. Especially with the Morgan’s. I actually wrote an article on my page about how much new collectors get prayed on with the Morgan dollars.
I think I've been lucky with my few purchases of Morgans. Since I like die breaks over guessing grade, I managed to pick this up: 1921 VAM 75A R6
