I found this 1982 d penny in my pocket change. It weights 3.10 grams I thought 1982 and up were only supposed to weight around 2.50grams what is the reason for this coin to be so much heavier 2021-04-20_160810_959.jpg 2021-04-20_160932_147.jpg

There is the rare bronze cent for 1982 thats within your cents weigh are you sure your scale is calibrated. And it would also help if we can get full pictures of the obverse and reverse.

Nope the 1982 D is either a zilincon or there's the possibility of finding the bronze cent.

yea 1982 is a fun year to collect because you get small date, large date, and then there is zinc coated in copper, and then also bronze cents so you get like 8 different varieties for 1982.

OK, let's try actually answering his question.

Before 1982 the cents were 95% copper 5% zinc and weighed 3.11 grams.
After 1982 the cents were copper plated zinc and weighed 2.5 grams.
In 1982 both compositions were used. The years started off with the 95% copper, and then part way through the year they switched to the copper plated zinc. So 1982 cents can be found in either composition.

They also changed the lettering size as well so the 1982 cents can be found in a total of 8 variations, P & D in copper with large or small dates, and P & D in plated zinc with large and small dates. All of these variations are common except the 1982 D small date in 95% copper. There are only two known pieces of that last one.

@bob1962 ...your cent is a large date. The weight tells you it is 95% copper. Go to lincolncentresource.com. It will help you understand. 1982 had 8 business strike varieties, including the ultra rare Denver small date copper...jmho...Spark

edit: The ninth variety was a proof...1982-S.

JeffC Go explore something and think a happy thought!

I never knew there was a 9th variety. Learned something new. Was the '82-S a small or large date?
