I wanted to buy this book when it came out but never pulled the trigger. Then the author, David Lawrence, passed away and the book went out of print and became hard to find. It's available on-line but that's not handy. Well, I finally found an affordable copy.
Is that the same David Lawrence as in the prominent dealer? I've bought a lot from them over the last year. This rather modest Barber dime happens to have been part of one purchase.
Yes it is. He is no longer with us but the business lives on. He was an early supporter of the Barber Coin Collectors Society.
That's a good looking dime for a detecting find. I put a picture of my Dansco in this thread. Nothing high grade but it works for me.
Wow! I had ordered from David Lawrence on more than a few occasions, and never had a single problem, so I'm sorry to hear about this. So here's a Barber dime that I've had for years. Plans of upgrading to a higher graded specimen just haven't happened (yet?).
I was fortunate to have purchased a copy when it first came out. It seemed like a lot of these series specific references were starting to be published in the 90's. Having spent the 70's and 80's looking for any numismatic info I could find (tough as a YN and college student), I bought most of these as they were issued, even if I didn't have a strong interest in the series. Glad I did, as they have become useful at various times over the last 25 years and I learned a lot from them You can never have too many reference books
I like having the actual volumes too. But DL's books are available in digital format on the NNP. https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/book/555294
David Lawrence was really David Feigenbaum, but he did business as David Lawrence Rare Coins. His son, John, worked with him and took over the business when his father died from ALS. I did some writing for them many years ago and took my payment in coins, naturally. One of the coins was an 1864 L Indian cent in MS64 brown, which I still have. I also bought, again many years ago, a PCGS AU58 1942/1 dime from DLRC, which I still have. Still a great place to do business with even if the founder and his son are no longer there.
Oh, I got all the books published by DLRC as review copies because I reviewed them for my column in Coins magazine. Probably COINage, also. Still very useful if you're writing about Barber coins.
