Can someone educate me on what the blob of metal on lincolns head is called is it error or ? Kinda interesting to say the least
Also i noticed the rim is rather big on the liberty side of coin is that off center or called something else?
http://www.error-ref.com/die-chips/. The thickness at 9 to 12 o'clock on the obverse is caused by a Misaligned Die. AKA MAD
It's a 1974 D actually. Looks like the copper was scrapped (damaged). Looks like from the top of head -down and across from top of forehead - back. Not the greatest pix as mentioned plus I'm just a newbie on this, so I'm probably incorrect. This is just my observance.
It’s a misplaced mint mark. They must have been drinking at the Denver Mint that day, to place a “D” that far away from the date! Just kidding. Honestly, as others have stated, it’s too difficult to make a positive identification from the photo. It could be from a die break or it may have received a well-placed gouge to raise the surface and then circulation may have worn other identifying marks. If you can provide better photos, you’ll likely get better opinions.
These happen there. I don't know why. We've got a nice 1943 with one of them almost in the exact same spot. Definitely keep it. I label ours, "small cud." Cud is just a piece of the die that's broken out from all the pounding the die took. Most times they start at the perimeter and work their way in, but not always. This one specifically would be a "retained cud," meaning it's retained on the inside, it didn't come off the rim, and it's the scarcer type, too. Good eye, there, girl. Nice find!
