I don't think you will get many post in this one...we coin collectors don't give out our dealers name and such...we want that all to ourselves!

Spencer, I'm ashamed of you. :p

Welcome to the forum anchor. You'll have to forgive Speedy - he probably got up on the wrong side of the bed today. :D

The answer to each of your sub-questions is "Yes", all of those are factors. But personally I can't give a single answer to your question, because the dealer I "like most" if I'm considering
    • the direct purchase of a gold coin is Clark Smith
    • bidding on a live auction for a gold coin is the Goldbergs
    • buying an uncirculated post-WW II Japanese coin is Takas-Japan on EBay
    • buying circulated modern Japanese coins at a coin show is Craig Feigner
    • the 1921D Walking Liberty needed to complete my only US set is anyone who has one in an acceptable condition at an acceptable price
    • and so forth.
The point is that unlike choosing a spouse in our monagamous society, there is no need to annoint a "favorite dealer" in the numismatic world, and doing so may cut you off from a lot of desireable material that your pal doesn't have in stock or available in his/her own dealer network.

    (1) Very business like and as honest as the day is long.
    (2) Carries a great many coins in stock, and access to a great deal more.
    (3) Has been known to cut prices for old customers and/or nubies.
    (4) Not really, unless you happen to be in Portland, Oregon.
    (5) www. steveestes.com
    (6) This man has gone out of his way to help me complete a particular set of coins that I have been working on for the last couple of years. The amount of time and effort is amazing, and he expects nothing in return except a "happy" customer. His name is Steve Estes if you havent already figured that out.

    I hope this helps.

    I am going to buy:
    1961 proof set :)
    1979 proof set (filled & clear) :) :)
    Lewis & Clark commemorative :)

Although I am in Ca, I have decide to contact a dealer in Wichita Falls Texas to attempt first purchase. A shop my Father used and trusted. I have tried walking in to local dealers around here and they are down right rude. (I have to use 1950's acceptable talk*&#!*&) They(the ones I have visited) are short and have no time to talk to you about what your looking for, its like I am buying a dadgum hotdog.YOU WANT MUSTARD OR NOT! NEXT! Can I get a napkin? NO SOUP FOR YOU! Maybe anyone can tell me about a dealer in my area (94501) that is personable, willing to set a positve presedence and won't try to get rid of his bad purchases on me. :)

I am very un easy about buying on ebay..I have bid on the Lewis and Clark from Coinmovers on ebay but the eclectic sale prices of previous L&C's kept my high bid to a red book price and it never won. hmmmm 38-150 not seeing who the high bidder is, is unsettling.

I will be attending the Coin shown in Sacramento (coming up soon not sure of the date) But I will have another list of wants by then.

I live 5 minutes from Minneapolis/St. Paul in MN and there are some dealers around, but eBay is my window to the world so to speak. I can't think of anything I might want that can't be found there. Good prices too. Today I bought 4 rolls of 1964-D silver dimes to add to my junk silver box and the price with shipping was only 4.23xface. I'll give 'em a quick check for Doubled Die Reverses and move on. Unless silver tanks, I think I'll always get my money back for them if I ever need to sell, and I now have 200 more new coins to inspect for anything interesting. I like it when my box gets heavier!

I’m luck to have a grate local dealer (frank). He’ll invite me in to his back office, show me his gray sheets, haggle over prices, and all around honest fellow. I would rather sell to him than use ebay any day.

He’s is a contrast to the other dealer in town. A dressed up redneck that wont come to the counter unless I want to look at slabbed coins. He has vertically no knowledge of coins unless it’s printed in the red book or on a gray sheet.

Just because we moved to the digital age of collecting we shouldn’t forget the social aspects of the hobby.

Our town (population about 5,000) doesn't have a coin dealer. Closest one is 40 miles away.

It's called International Coin, and is run primarily by a man and his daughter. Ron and Teresa May.

Inventory is considerable. Prices are fair. Always friendly. First-name basis. Completely trusting, in that I can handle thousand dollar coins or notes, and not have anyone looking over my shoulder.

Located in Grand Junction, Colorado, International Coin is often a stop for me when I'm in town.

    :) :)

My brother used to work for them in one of their previous incarnations. Not my favorite, honestly.

But that's not what the questioner asked. My favorite of all time is the one I use here in town. Byrd Saylor, owner of Louisville Numismatic Exchange. He has always treated me nice, even though I almost never spend more than $50 at a time. He has been in business for at least 40 years, and it shows. Quite often, if I'm buying several coins, and the total comes out to something odd, he'll just round it down to the nearest $5. So if the total is $37.14, he'll charge me $35. Heck, he even thought enough of me to allow me to help perform the marriage service of his son.

Even after moving to Pittsburgh, I may continue to use him from time to time. Good service is worth rewarding.

Thanks OldDan. I checked out his website, and the guy seems to have a great eye for beautiful coins. For the ones where I'm a bit familiar with the going price from other sources, his prices seem very competitive. Maybe I'll give him a try, as soon as I get over this mental block about what to do next. I'm sort of dead in the water right now, ready to start something new but having nothing to start.

I don't think that I have a dealer within a hundred miles from me. I have called the advertised stores but they were not show room but instead I will be at that office park address on Tuesday night from.....to buy any estate coins....etc..........message machines.

I have used Clark Smith before for gold coins so I would second the reference that Roy had made for I got what I expected to get. I also used Panda for gold a couple of times and got what I expected at cheaper prices that I saw on e-bay for the same "claimed" type of coin. However, I also got quite a few nice gold coins on e-bay some years ago but I would not recommend anything from a purchase that long ago. Who knows if it is the same person on the other end anymore?

I think I will check out Old Dan's recommend site. I don't think that anyone would try to pull anything over him and he would know it if they did so in other words it should be a good recommenation.

COINS PLUS - A little family run store in Newhall CA with a Bi8d Board. The owners take the time to explain things and help new collectors. Example - If a kid buys something they get a old coin in their change. It might be only a AG Buffalo or a worn wheatie but they love the surprize.

For me the best dealers are the internet ones that have the zoom-in capable, high dpi scans. The best web sites and dealers for that are Heritage and David Lawrence I think.

Much better to be able to examine coins and compare from a scan, and do comparables from the comfort of my home hundreds of miles from a coin dealer.

I've only been to one dealer, made the mistake of mentioning that I was in college and his first statement was 'so you don't have much money to spend' and didn't how much interest and it put me off. It's true I'm a grad student but I'm also working full time. I find the best place to buy coins is at coins shows.
