I was very fortunate to have parents who owned a small, but busy cafe. While I worked at the drugstore for 50 cents an hour, beginning in 1959, I also put in many hours at the cafe, where I had access to going through the cash register as many times a day as I wanted. I managed to fill a walking liberty set, and got close to filling other sets. Those were the days! Steve
I started a penny collection when I was given a Lincoln penny album and a few starter pennies when I was 6. I didn't fill the album until I retired. Other priorities got in the way, but I always saved the nice pennies and wheat cents in my change. Going to coin shops and shows was a rare event, but the only way to find the rare dates. EBay changed that. Then I started on Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents to complete a set I inherited from my father. I did the research, joined a couple of coin forums and learned more. I finally finished my collection of circulated Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents, not just the standard album holes, but the complete set of mint deliberate die changes. http://members.iphouse.com/frech001/Al's Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cent Complete Design Set.pdf
We are missing the point , Coin Talkers . I'm talking about all the obvious "Damaged" coins . NOT errors . Maybe I'm just an at 54 years old ? As I pour over countless posts of such inquires I see the frustrations of others .
Perhaps the penny is the most mistreated coin. I have friends who toss pennies on the ground from their change because they don't like them, but always keep the silver (nickels, dimes, quarters, etc.). For this reason, more pennies find their ways into parking lots, etc. compared to all other coins. Pennies for this reason are most likely prone to getting damaged more often compared to the other coins. Plus, when individuals wish to damage coins, they usually go for the cheapest ones, the pennies. These are most likely the contributing factors as to why the frequency of damaged penny threads outnumber damaged nickel, dime, quarter, etc. coin threads. And in the end, individuals will come across damaged pennies and make threads questioning how and why this damage occurred.
This thread is still totally on track. If the most common denomination struck is 1 cent it stands to reason it will be a/ the most common coin in circulation b/ the most commonly damaged coin c/ the most common subject of get rich videos etc.
I started coin roll hunting when I was about 7 years old. Pennies were my start.I picked up IH in AU condition, and a lot of teens that were at least AU58. 1909 s vdb was also in the roles but i only have 1 left. O by the way I lived in Mount Vernon NY. My mom would pick up a role once a week.
Because I am just on the pennies. Silver coins, etc have not gotten to. As another said it takes time. You were a “newbie” once? Every day is a “Newbie” day. Peace
I thought that most of this thread was "cute" especially all the pictures of girls named "Penny". Is "Penny Lane" included?
I could think of bigger and better things to complain about but hey, we'll talk more about dimes or nickels, anything but pennies, so you'll sleep better!
