It's not the same coin below the date on one of the pictures there is a clip mark or something. Funny though, but one really should never try and clean coins for the most part it ruins any value the coin may have and will hasten the process of deterioration of the coin in the future.
funny how those two always go hand-in-hand! yeah... fortunately, I struck a bargain with my wife - she got a kiln for her pottery, and I got a stash of money. This coin was my last purchase to even the score. Luckily, she doesn't watch things as close as I do, so I can probably sneak in one more purchase before she puts an end to my buying streak.
interesting.... there is something special about this coin. The seller mentioned there were signs of die clash, but check this out... I think the obverse has been struck over a second reverse. I have zoomed in on the obvious portions of what I think may be something very interesting. GD - is that even possible? Now that I look at it closer, I think that's a mirror image of the reverse showing through on the obverse - those marks are actually depressions on the surface. weird.
It's not an overstrike or the areas in question would be raised not incuse. The only thing that makes sense would be a die clash. But I find it hard to imagine how a die clash would occur with coins that were struck one at a time in a manually operated screw press That one's a first for me.
I guess it has to be a die clash... a mirror image of the reverse 5 o'clock appears at 7 o'clock on the obverse. It is fairly widespread - I can see traces of the legend all the way up to about 10 - and a reverse of both 5's. gotta be a die clash - but sweet! It's bold... this could be one of a kind.
Are those pictures of the same coin before and after our friend billzach put his magic fingers to work?
