I have been actively searching for 2005 onward non-satin dimes in ms67 or better (PCGS or NGC). I have been looking in all of the usual places (Ebay, Heritage etc...) and I have found only one in the past month (I scooped it up right away).
Just to prove that these are really rare coins I challenge all members to post a link to any 2005-2009 (cert) ms67+ dime. Good luck!

Ok...I'll be the first to look stupid...what's an "onward" dime?

EDIT: OH! LOL...I get it! 2005 to present...duh! :goof:

I've got a bunch of them...just not graded, yet.

I suspect that the apparent "rarity" of certified examples is due to the fact that it costs more to have them certified than they sell for.

No, it's because there are very few of them that are actually of that grade or higher.

So the majority that have been slabbed received low grades?

EDIT: My bad...I somehow was thinking the "Satin" variety...not the non-Satin ones.

As a general rule there are very few business strike coins worthy of MS67 or higher in any denomination. Outside of bullion coins and commems that is.

They go for about 85 to 90 clams. the 2009's go for much more. I just got a ms67 2005 d and I tell you now you do just pull those out of rolls left and right.

It seems like the dates that were available in rolls directly from the mint (state quarters and some nickels) are a bit more common.

    So what makes 2005 special?

Starting in 2005, mint sets were assembled with special "satin finish" uncirculated coins, instead of normal business strikes. Therefore, if a collector wishes to assemble uncirculated sets of business strike coins, they must do so with coins released to the public with the intent to circulate. These coins usually get run through the wringer (coin counters, rollers, etc.) before they make it to the public (as opposed to being assembled into a set right at the mint), and therefore they are less likely to appear in higher grades.

That is the first year that they were not available in mint sets so they all had to come from rolls.
