    Seated dollars.
I have never seen a dealer have more than 10 of these mostly in junk or very worn condition. They are all rare and are fabulous and expensive in any grade that has not been cleaned or circulated. No one talks about them and I have never (yet) met anyone who is seriously collecting them.
Those followed by Shield and Liberty nickles, then seated dimes and half dimes, then seated quarters and halves, then Barber's.
The problem with Barber coins (at least halves) is they only come in two grades, worn out and very expensive. I pitty the person who would want to put together a set of Barber halves in VF.
There is no coin after 1945 that is underrated because they are all so common and boring save for die varieties!!!

Wow, I was looking at the mintages and values of those seated dollars. That's some serious coin to go after those. The series before them, forget it.

The prices of completeing a set is out of the reach of most collectors today.
I collect only type coins for the same reason $$$$

I agree on the Barber series, but I think it will always be under rated due to the design. Its not the most popular, but good luck finding one in better grades.

Those are some sweet coins I have never seen any of those that are that nice, but I don't get out much LOL.

I am interested in acquiring some very high quality Buffalo nickels to compliment my gold Buffalo collection.
    I'd like some PR70s or MS70s.
The years aren't important, just the quality. (Unless the are differences in the design between the years) I want them to use to compare the old nickels with to new gold Buffaloes.

    Any suggestions?

The last time or two a thread of this nature was posted several people felt the Peace Dollar was definitely an under rated series, this time it didn't get mentioned at all. That seems very strange to me, so I'll say the Peace Dollar.

The twenty four coin set was made for circulation with four of those at less than one million minted. I think about ten others had less than 2 million minted. That is not a very big mintage when you consider all the times many silver coins were melted down, those that are lost (at the bottom of a lake or pond and etc.), and those that are just worn down.

I have to also add I think it is a beautiful coin to begin with and the Miss Liberty on it is the hottest Miss Liberty we've ever had.

I think the most under-rated US coin is a toss-up between the 20-cent piece and the 2-cent piece. Both have a small collector following but are (reasonably) cheap to buy.

The most under-rated field of collecting? I would say Early American Copper Die State collecting. Many die states of particular varieties are quite cheap!

    Just my opinion!

I was glad to see that the 3CS and 3CN were listed some many times as I have always though they were very underrated. Using the example above the 3cn had 23 circulation strikes (24 if you count the 1887/6) 17 of these have a mintage of under 1 million and 20 have a mintage of under 2 million. The 3CS is almost the same thing with 23 circulation strikes and 17 of these have a mintage of fewer than 1 million and 20 have a mintage of fewer than 2 million. While most of these have low to very low mintages they are surprisingly affordable.

Well I think all modern commemoratives are under valued. Heck so easy to get these for much less than meltdown. I love the silver 3 cent piece posted earlier, best example i ever saw of the type. Traci

For actual under rated coin, there are many. For a series of under rated coins, there again are many and many have already been listed here. Sort of difficult to say which coin(s) are under rated value wise, availability, popularity, etc. There are coins that are really just ignored by the masses as ever being valuable except a few in the series. Roosevelt Dimes as an example, Kennedy Halves, Jefferson Nickels and basically all State Quarters. It really appears that almost anything in coins with our presidents on them is just not popular with the general coin collecting populace. Many start collecting these and they usually end up in an attic, closet or just in a box somewhere.
I never could figure out why there is so little interest in the Shield Nickels or the Liberty Head Nickels or is it that people just don't like Nickels? Mintages are high but finding them in decent conditions isn't easy. Exception is naturally the Buffalo/Indian Head Nickels that are really popular.
My opinion of the really next big collectable is the old standby Mercury Dimes. With a population in the USA of 300,000,000 and many of the Merc's with only a few million made, some should really jump in value soon. Note as an example the 31D with only a few million made and the prices are really low.

Carl, I was looking at the most recent Grey Sheet, and I think the 31-D Merc dime has taken a nice jump in price since the last time I looked there.

When you ask why the Shield nickel is so under-appreciated, I am compelled to risk offending some CT members, but the truth is that IMO, it's the ugliest design of any American coin, ever!

As far as I'm concerned, Liberty is a lady, and I love the coins that feature her the most.

Wow thanks for all the info I learned a lot. basically I thought people would say something like an 1803 Graped Bust half Cent with less than 100,000 minted or a 31S buffalo with just over 1,000,000. I guess I was asking about single coins and learned about entire series. Thanks again.

Agreed. In fact, I would say half cents in general and 19th century proofs in general.

In the half cents, I feel the Draped Bust and Classic Head are excellent values. Both are available in high grades for moderate $$$. Contrast with type Large Cents in the same grades !

I'm saying this in the sense of "underappreciated", not "sleeper". I see no reason why these coins are set for a rocket ship ride, price wise. Per Mike's comments earlier, I don't believe in "sleepers".
