i think the biggest increases over purchase will be in the commems area. The marine dollar and stamp have sold out and allready increased 50%. The Legacy set has done much the same. I think the straight proof and unc dollars in the commems might not do as well just for the shear quantity that have been sold. But the special sets i think will do well. I dont think the state quarter sets will do all that well, unless the number of sets sold remains relatively low.... one thing to consider -- the mint has been increasing the number of redesigns on the US coins... this will increase the number of new collectors - this will in turn possibly raise the value of allready sold out coins....

its a tough guess in any direction!!

I know that I sold my Westward journey coin & medal sets for more than 3 times their issue price. I think that one did ok for me (although I have no idea what they are selling for now).

I dont think the 11 coin clad set will do very good in returns in the long run based on the mintage already 2,018,289. and the 11 coin silver set is up pretty high too, 774,305..

overall I think all the mintage numbers are up this year because of the nickel re-design...I agree with the demand for the marine and legacy set because of the Comm. anything with the marine dollar in it will be pretty hot.. pretty glad i got 2 legacy sets. One for me and one to sell down the road...

The mintage numbers are pretty low for the John Marshall 172,109 total sold out of a possible 400,000....

I don’t know. Mint sets released during boom years don’t seem to do to well in the long run, but you never know. I got a silver proof set to brake up and a gold eagle because it wanted one.

    potential increase in value

o.k. i tell my secret. i think the silver proof half dollar and dime will increase its value. i also think ocean in view will be traded higher than american bison.
as for modern commems. the rare one are 1996 olympics. other than that. every year series were considered high in mintage.

true the 96 olympics were very low mintage due to the fact the commem market was flooded and no one bought them - but you asked which of the 2005 mint products would do well - (just to tip the boat as someone once said)

    potential to increase

i see many 2005 single coins can be a candidate for a good return in investment. let's wait after 2005. and see if i am correct.

1/10th gold usually carries a low mintage so is harder to find later.
I'm still sticking to my guns on the marine commem. The mintage may be a bit higher, but when commem mintage stops, they'll military will still be making marines ;)

The MINT SETS will be the keepers of 2005. First year for a full set of SATIN coins and, like it or not, there will never be another "first" year for the satins. The high grade satin nickels are already commanding very high premiums and that WILL NOT end any time soon. In the end I, and my dealer, believe the Ocean in View nickel will be the overall winner of the nickel program. Face it, there are tons of people still looking for buffalo nickels (2005) that have not even seen one in circulation. I have never received one in change but do feel the hoarders will eventually let them go. The Ocean in View will probably end up being the lowest minted as the mint will want to switch gears for 2006 and, in my opinion, it is the worst design of the series so I have picked up extra proofs and extra satins. Who knows which single satin coin will win out in the long term but I have a feeling one of those coins in those satin mint sets will eventually shock us all so we will have to give it some time and see what happens. As for as the commemoratives are concerned by the end of the year everyone will be thinking 2006 and interests will die down. I have been collecting for over 30 years and seldom see a commemorative hold on to its first three months of value. The Marine coin may be the keeper but will not see the percentage on increase some of the satins will obtain over time.
If the mint releases new pure gold bullion buffalo nickel reproductions in 2006 in 1/10 oz., 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz and full ounce coins, for a one year only issue, that will be WELL worth putting your money in to as nothing matches the lure of the buffalo and any ONE year issue in gold would be worth holding! Again, time will tell.
Thanks for the great post and question Anchor1112!

I hear they may be confiscated by a power a bit higher than the US Mint.

well, i think that the buffalo nick doesnt have anything special like FS or FB, or bell lines like the Jefferson Nickel, Eis Dime and the Franklin halves do.. but still, the satins are nice, and i dont really see the speciality in the oceans.. could someone let me know figures and stats on the 05's? i'm a new collector aged 14.

At first I thought the "keeper" for 2005 was going to be the new satin mint set and I don't have the mintage figures for this year up to date but I do know they've been on back order almost the entire year so something must be going on and it just makes me feel my "gut reaction" to the new finish is holding up, so I think it will turn into a good set to have in your collection for the future. That being said, the fact that the mint just released the new nickel design concept for 2006 placing the image of Jefferson in a forward facing position means that both the Bison and Ocean View nickels will be a one year design and even though the mintages are high it will only be for one year, so I would make sure I have an example or two in the collection of both 2005 designs for the future as well. I've put away 10 sets of the Legacy Collection only because of the inclusion of the two commems. it includes. The mint hasen't released any information about the future of this type of set, but the mintage was cut short and only 50,000 were produced, therefore I feel this is a good one to have in the collection for the future as well. The standard proof and silver proof sets will probably hold there own but that is based solely on the final mintage figures and both seem to be running at or above the norm. so I don't see anything out of the ordinary there, although of course to keep the collection complete examples of both are needed and I love the look of both sets this year. I am curious about the Kansas state quarter. The two roll sets sold out very quickly this year.

I wish all you folks who dream about getting rich without any effort would come with me to Brooklyn, so I could show you the bridge I have for sale cheap. [IMG]

    Let's get real folks.
    • If everyone thinks something will be valuable some day, and stock up on it, you have something that will be worth either face value or bullion value in 100 years.
    • If no one thinks it's going to be worth much in the future, they don't save it, and in 100 years it's worth a huge premium over face/bullion.
Bottom line - collect for the joy of collecting, and let the value take care of itself. [IMG]
