It depends what you like. Do you prefer modern gold or pre-1933 gold? In that price range, you are probably going to be limited to smaller pieces such as modern American Gold Eagles...and probably the 1/10oz size. But, there are many modern gold coins with various designs from many countries.

Yes, for that price you may be a bit limited, however I started off with $100 and I bought 2 dos pesos coins. You can also go on ebay if you want and buy a 1/10 gold eagle. If you decide to buy on ebay make sure you read the feedback score carefully and take your time.

When buying gold it is preferable that you see the gold coins first if at all possible, so be sure and check out the coin stores in your area. good luck

I'd save up your money and get some real nice gold! Pre-33 quarter eagles is what I started out with, gold wise.
You can always buy the AGE's which fretboard and camaro have mentioned, and you can also buy some other bullion coins, whatever you like is what is really important.

You can get some decent half-sovereigns for that price.

Maybe some 2 or 2 1/2 Peso Mexican gold coins currently in the $65-80 price range. Check Apmex.com

Percentage wise in the non $20 category, I would go with the $5 Liberties and Indians, they represent the best value with the lowest margin over the gold value. I would stay away from the $2.50 and the $1 gold. $10 Libs are okay, but have higher margins. $20s used to be the best, but lately the premiums on them are significant.

For about $240ish you can get a 20 LMU from France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy that trade at a small margin over melt. The Swiss Helvetia pieces from the 19th century like this one:

    Are some of my faves.

I also like the Vrenellis too, but not as much as the Helvetias:

If you are more parsimonious like I am sometimes, you might buy something like this, over 100 years old but sells at melt:
