ERROR on thread title, should read: Doubled Dies Just replied to a thread about doubled dies and thought I would try a simple explanation. I hope it is fundamentally acceptable.
Robert.. The correct Numismatic Terminology is actually Doubled Die You have it correct in your post but not the title. You have time to edit your title now.
A doubled die is an error in die preparation, but not an “error” as the purists define them. The purists call a doubled die a die variety. Errors occur during the coin production process. To me a doubled die is an error, but that is an incorrect interpretation.
OK, I've made my first? mistake for 2021 and it was a beaut! I'm sure it won't be my last. Ed, do you think you could follow my posts and point out my deficiencies or do you not wish to devote all your time on CT chasing after me and cleaning up my messes?
No, you explained it correctly. What I was referring to was the nomenclature which classifies a doubled die coin, not as an error piece, but as a die variety. Errors only occur, according to error collectors, after the die has been made and put into service. To me die preparation mistakes are errors, but the vast majority of error coin collectors don’t see it that way.
Always wondered how a double strike could only affect a small part of a coin and not the entire thing, based on previous explanations. Yours makes sense, finally. so it’s a screw up, not an actual error?
I think the process is Master die Hub Working die You can watch the process from the US Mint on YouTube via this link:
